The cabin was as advertised. Very simple and comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised that there was chopped wood at the cabin. A really nice hike to the cabin. I was bear prepared, but saw no animals other than chipmunks.

The trip and cabin were just right for us. We walked in on S. Cottonwood Trail in 4.5 hours during a warm afternoon that softened the snow crust, making do some post-holing. We should have come in the morning while the crust was still firm, as it was the following morning during our 3.5-hour walk out. Cabin was quaint and rustic, with a single bunk, a wood burning stove, and not too much more. Just what we wanted. There was also a few cooking pans, scoop shovel, hatchet, wood-splitter axes, two bow saws, 3 mouse traps, and a small assortment of cooking utensils. Dead trees for the stove have been used up in the immediate vicinity of the cabin but there are many many dead trees a little further out, and there is a sled available to help pull wood back. The stove’s flu was broken, so the stove smoked the cabin a bit when the door was open, but was manageable. The stove’s ash shovel had a missing handle so the shovel quickly got too hot to handle inside the hot oven. We suggest bringing a new ash shovel.

Visited in early April after a very warm day, had a long hike in on soft snow the last 2.5 miles. Snowshoes would have been nice to have! Don't forget to restock the firewood for the next visitor.

I hiked in from South Cottonwood and it's about 6.5 miles of relatively low incline. Your other option of accessing the cabin is from History Rock in Hyalite and while the trail is shorter (4-4.5miles) it's much steeper. The cabin is about 8x12ft and is just big enough for a single bunk, small stove, and a table that folds down when not in use - it's certainly not meant for more than 2 people! There is a lovely campfire area right outside the cabin with plenty of logs for seating. The cabin itself has 2 folding chairs, a bow saw, a hand saw, small ax, large ax, and a few pots and pans of varying condition. The cabin is not stocked with firewood but there are many downed trees in the area so it's possible to saw and gather enough wood to heat it well. The proper etiquette is to cut and stack enough wood inside the cabin so the next traveler will have enough dry wood to make a fire. Because you will possibly be starting a fire with very damp wood I'd suggest bringing fire starters with you as regular paper won't be enough to get it going. Flies are always an issue at this cabin but leaving the door and windows open gets rid of most of them. It looks like someone before me brought in a fly sticky trap that hung from the ceiling and I have to say that it must be working well because there were far fewer flies in the cabin than I have ever seen! Maybe bring one along if you have them handy. **They recently changed the cabin combo and a few entries in the log books suggested that people didn't have the correct code and ended up crawling through the windows. As of 9/19/20 you'll want to use the cabin combo that starts with a 2.

We loved it! It was well stocked w/ everything you could need; firewood, cookware, etc. A beautiful and peaceful getaway.
