We checked in at the main campground and were told that the combination lock for the campground had been stolen so there would be no way to lock the main gate behind us (bring a lock with you) which wasn't a big deal for the most part. Upon arriving at the campground we found the remnants of a fire still smoldering and quite a bit of garbage laying about (thanks for that previous campers)...trash bins were stuffed to the max as well. Now Gatewood is billed as a pet friendly place and for the most part it is but thanks to our previous campers, made it a nightmare for us. Onions everywhere along with cigarette butts all over the place....needless to say our 14week old puppy got into these before we have a chance to clean them all up and damn near died in the process (lethargic, couldn't stand or eat/drink). Nearest vet is in Elkins and managed to save this fellas life. $600 later we go back to the camp and clean the hell out of the place. Managed to have an okay time but obviously were worried about what he'd get into next. Gatewood is a nice place when its clean and taken care of but as with a lot of other places, suffers from the dirty human beings leaving their filth around for others to clean up. It's also obvious that American Land and Leisure (campground managers) don't really care about the places they are supposed to be caretaking or none of this would have happened. Special shout out to the jackasses that left all the food and cigarette butts laying about....you are truly a fine example of the type of campers that have been ruining national forest campsites fro generations.
