If you’re looking for solitude and quiet this may not be the place for you. The lookout itself is fine. What I think would be helpful is an option of a sign to attach to the gate at the bottom of the stairs indicating that the lookout is rented and that privacy should be respected. If you want to visit with all the sightseers coming up you could leave the sign down. We felt like animals in a zoo at times. (You could make and bring your own). Also, I highly recommend bringing earplugs. The wind blows so hard at times that you can’t sleep due to the creaking, squeaking, grinding, tapping, and various noises the building makes. The views are great though. And the lookout is well stocked. That last mile and a half is pretty rough.

Did not realize that the road is impassable in early May. We got about 5 miles from the lookout and went to turn down the road and it was covered in about 2 feet of snow. I've stayed at this lookout twice in the past and will visit again when the snow is melted.

Great cabin. Amazing views. The periodic hiker was charming. The endless string of individuals and their families on four-wheelers equipped with American flags who set up impromptu block parties at all hours and were insulted and incredulous when they were told my family had rented the cabin for the weekend and they were unable to access the cabin--not so much fun. Several even told me that if they really wanted to that they could come up at any time to see the cabin and my family didn't have any ability to stop them. Needless to say, we left a few days early. I don't think there is much the forest service can do about it other than remove the notion of privacy and the cabin being a quiet area from the list of cabin amenities. In truth, worst forest service cabin I've ever stayed at, but unfortunately nothing to do with the cabin. I would never stay there again and would ultimately not recommend.
