Who says there are small critters in the building? We experienced none! Whoever got rid of them- thanks very much . The adobe makes the stay very pleasant. The warmth from the day comes in at night and vice-versa during the day. The vault toilet was clean and acceptable. Having solar lights come on with the back light is a nice touch. The microwave worked great and the water basin in back worked great. Yes, there were many hikers frequently passing day & night during the race from globe, but quiet, friendly & nice. I should have brought my telescope. All in all a nice couple days!

We stayed 2 nights at the cabin and had a great time! The hosts Mike and Bonnie were awesome! They showed us around the museum, shared history of the property with us and even gave us some delicious bread to bake, so nice! The first night, the gas fireplace didn't work, otherwise I would give 5 stars but Mike got it working the next day so we were toasty warm the 2nd night. It was relaxing, beautiful, full of AZ history and I feel lucky to have been exposed to it. We will come back again with other family members so they can experience the magic. Don't wait, book it now!

We had an enjoyable one-night stay at KCC. We parked next to the cabin, which was convenient for unloading. The cabin has electric space heaters and a propane furnace in the form of a woodstove. It took us 10 minutes to find the instructions and learn how to start the furnace but, once lit, the cabin was soon cozy. Placing a pot of water on top of the furnace maintained a comfortable level of humidity in the cabin. We brought sheets to cover the plastic covered mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows, and slept well. There was a large and a small coffee maker. We could not plug in the large one while it was on the kitchen counter, so we created a temporary shelf extension by cantilevering a large cutting board, using the microwave oven for a counter weight. It worked, but a short extension cord would be a more elegant solution. There really is no shower, unless you MacGyver a bucket with water heated using the hot plate. The hiking nearby was convenient and scenic. The camp hosts were very friendly and informative. They mentioned that folks who stay at the rustic, remote KCC are generally easy going. Kentucky Camp Cabin is a gem in the ruff. A little more restoration, e.g., finishing the wood floors, adding an indoor sink, and creating a usable shower would make it a more pleasant place to stay, but I suppose that any improvements would require more maintenance and increase demand for the cabin use. In any case, we will aim to stay here again.

Cabin’s grill valve was stuck—couldn’t get it open to grill anything. Otherwise 5 stars. Loved it.

Good stock of kitchen equipment. Comfortable. Shower = hose. Electric radiators if it is cold. Gas grill and charcoal grill. Arizona Trail goes right through front yard. Beautiful location.

Cabin was as described. We brought all the suggested supplies (e.g. toilet paper) but discovered there were some in the cabin. We appreciated the reading material. Stove worked well to heat the living room and kitchen. Very enjoyable.

The combination padlock at the gate at the top of the hill would not open on the day of the arrival. At the time, it appeared that the wrong combination had been provided, but by the next day it became clear that the lock was seized. There was no caretaker onsite this weekend and no help available from the forest service. Rec.gov did their best to help that first evening, but there was not much they could do other than have us try alternate combinations. After applying a lock lubricant product (Lock-Ease) the next evening, the lock returned to normal operation. The end result was that we had no vehicle access to the property for the first night and day and had to hike in all of our supplies down the 1/4 mile access road to the cabin. The lock should work now for at least a few weeks and maybe a few months, but if you can't make the 1/4 mile hike with all your supplies, you might want to come prepared with a lock lubricant. The cabin was well equipped with more than we expected for a rustic period cabin. The gas burning fireplace/stove made the living area very cozy and inviting. The adobe walls helped keep the cabin warm at night and cool during the day. There is a sink on the back patio next to the grill, and included wash basins and drying racks for cleaning dishes. There are also a few games and books in the cabin. There are quite a few more books in the Headquarters building. We did not see any evidence of mice at all in the cabin as noted by prior reviewers and people in the guest book. But we were also very careful with food and trash storage so as to not encourage any visitations. There is some evidence of a roof leak on the ceiling above the kitchen area. The area is generally very quiet except for the occasional vehicle driving by on the nearby road (1/4 mile away). The Arizona Trail also passes directly through Kentucky Camp, so expect to see hikers and bikers passing through on this trail. No cell coverage in camp, only on hilltop.

We had a very enjoyable and restfull time during our two day stay at Kentuckey camp. Walked the Arizona trail some and walked thru the main builing and enjoyed the displays. Quite a bit of foot , horse and bike traffic so we didn't feel that we were isolated out at the end of the road. Facilities were somewhat rustic but very doable for our short stay. Will consider booking again in 2021. Highly recommend this getaway.
