Previous renter left a good wood supply. Weather was sub-zero, so it took the stove awhile to heat up the cabin, but once warm, it was easy to keep it cozy.

Nice cabin and location. It is on the trail system around Hyalite Lake, and it is nice to ski/hike to Palisade Falls from there. In the winter, ice climbers are often on the ice fall. We and our children, have visited in the winter, yearly, for some time. The split wood and kindling leave tends to be poor at Maxey, and seems to be declining. One year, it was zero, so come prepared and on time, to get the stove going. The wood stove installation is lacking stove pipe length, so struggles to heat the cabin, during lower temperatures. Prepare to stay warm in extreme cold. The stove is slow to cook, but works, yet we bring a propane stove to help out. The winter access is only ~1/2 mile, on a forest service road, so we bring a sled to carry equipment. The Forest Service does not provide propane for the lantern, nor should they. We have usually found extra lantern mantles, in the hutch. The mantles, on the lantern, are often broken, so know how to change them, and you may want to bring a set, just in case, and bring propane, if you plan on using it. Please leave ample split wood, chunks and kindling, for the next people. They may be coming with young children!

This cabin is mediocre at best with blah vistas and basically no charm... book elsewhere so we can live here all winter! To pick a high point in recent years...3am visit by a very vocal playful group of coyotes running ski trails, surrounding cabin, and hooting it up in snowy meadow...awesome.

We have stayed several times at Maxey and it's awesome!. This time we did find a shortage of tissue in the outhouse; fortunately we had brought extra supplies. While we were there some skiers with their dog stopped on the trail that runs through the meadow below and after a few minutes decided to make their way up to the cabin. They told us they didn't think anyone was there, although smoke was coming from the chimney. They asked if they could eat their lunch at the pic-nic table and they were friendly enough so we said no problem (what else were we going to say?). While they were there they used the outhouse, which put a dent in our meager supplies and may explain why the usual ample supply of tissue was lacking. I suspect skiers know it is there and use it regularly. Anyway, I don't know how to remedy this. It's not that we're antisocial; we just weren't expecting company and were enjoying our solitude..
