Stony Cabin is in a neat area, close to Philipsburg and across a dirt road is Stony Creek and the campground. The cabin is right on a dirt road and I can't imagine that being super fun in the summer with more road traffic...dust and not a lot of privacy. The campground across the dirt road is probably a better bet unless you want a cute little cabin to hang out in. The wood stove is awesome and heats that little cabin beautifully. The cabin sits at the base of a shale slope which is quite beautiful. The better view is from the campground though. I'm disappointed in people leaving a mess behind for others at these cabins. When we arrived it was painfully obvious the last people hadn't bothered to sweep the cabin or wipe down the table. The bowls and pans were all...gross. I would not plan on using them. There were bits of bacon and bacon grease all over the propane stove that's supplied. There were Clorox wipes right there and left... unused. It's just not the best way to begin your fun cabin stay to be cleaning up after someone else. When someone else leaves a mess it becomes your responsibility, so please just do the work to leave it nice for the next person. If we all left these places just a little nicer than we found them this system would really work well.

Would appreciate it if people would clean up their dog poop.........perhaps a sign reminder and some plastic bags there would help. This same problem occurred last year when I stayed at the cabin. Appreciate the good quality firewood provided. Would be great to have a bathroom near the cabin instead of across the road.

Cabin is located at the top of Rock Creek. Pros: Good location for driving to a fishing access. Cons: located literally next to a rock hill so its kinda limited on cabin style shenanigans in so much as there's no open space to really stretch your legs with the kids. Overall, the cabin is a typical USFS cabin. I've stayed in a bunch and this is really no different than the others. It was a fun mid July experience, fishing was a plus. Fire roads up from the cabin a plus. Its quiet but its also located right across the road from a campground so it could be a gamble depending how much solitude you're looking for. Personally, I probably wont return to this one not for any reason against the USFS, location or things like that, just cause it really doesn't meet my what I've come to fancy as open fields and solitude for the simple reasons of the massive rock hill 20 feet off the cabin or campground across the road.

Smaller than most cabins you can rent from the USFS in the area, situated in a tight valley between a scree slope and a road, though lightly traveled road. This cabin is of course cheaper than most but better than a tent. It is also a benefit to be able to reserve something in the area as many of the campgrounds along Rock Creek and other nearby areas are first come first serve only. We used this as a guaranteed spot to stay between white water rafting trips so it served it's purpose. Clean cabin and works well for the price. Road in is gravel but in good condition from Phillipsburg. Vault toilet is shared with campground.
