Or was a great place but unfortunately someone stole the solar panels and it’s very hot inside. Otherwise I would recommend it for family or friend group trips. The two showers and fridge were great.

The actual facility is wonderful and in an excellent location, it is modern. BUT it is not maintained or cleaned. It doesn't operate as advertised and reading past reviews these problems have persisted for some time. The lighting system does not work. The washer and dryer are new, but don't work because of the lack of electricity. The stove and refrigerator work off of propane as does the hot water heater. There is an active generator that supports the facility that runs every morning and evening and the connection to Hirz Cabin has not been repaired. The screens on the windows are missing, which lets in all kinds of critters, so at night the windows need to be shut, and that is not nice on a hot summer night. The cabin was not clean!!! Trash on the floor, dirt on the floor and counters. The lack of maintenance and care shows. The wildfire "Defensible" space around the cabin is an improvement, but whoever did the project did not understand Defensible space as concentrations of wood chips were stacked directly under and around the Propane tank. No where, were any signs prohibiting open fires. In the campground adjacent to the cabin, there was a "Flaming" open campfire stacked with wood within 3 feet of flammable vegetation. There was no one around in the whole campground. It was wonderful to have the whole area to ourselves, but there is a total lack of care for a wonderful facility.

The Bad: Power was out due to someone having stolen the battery back up to the cabin. I was told 2 days before the Father’s Day trip and plans had been made and no adjustment could be made. The first night was rough with the outside heat over 95 during the day. The inside upstairs became a sauna and sleep was difficult. There is a AC unit but it runs off electricity and didn’t work. The other 3 nights were much more manageable when the outside temps dropped and the cabin became pleasant. One last note, lots of rodent droppings throughout the cabin. There are also a few wasps nests on the side of the cabin. The Good: Beds were nice, just bring bedding. The fridge and the stove worked well. This made food storage so nice. The cabin is about 1/3 of a mile away from the water but water was high and made it difficult to enter the water. The point on the first Hirz Campground away from the boat ramp is the best spot to set up a day camp by the water. When water is low in the lake, this would be much easier. Other activities was an hour car trip up to Mount Shasta, checking out the bridge where the McCloud enters Shasta, paddle boards that we brought, swimming, hiking around the campground (watch out for poison oak), bbqing in the stone fire pit, relaxing on the cabin lawn chairs, and playing card games at the table. We had a lovely time after the first night. Lots of activities and the scenery is lovely.

Considering that we were four teenage girls alone in the woods with no service, we always felt safe during our stay. I recommend bringing a steak knife, spatula, tongs, dish towels and a can opener but other than that there were plenty of utensils. They provided fitted sheets, but definitely bring your own blankets and pillows. Bring a box fan for upstairs at night for sure. Windows open at night/closed during the day kept it nice and cool inside though. Verizon and At&t could catch a bar in some places, just enough to make a phone call if needed. There is an abundance of poison oak so if you're bringing children up just be aware of that, but it is definitely not a huge issue in most parts. We never had any problems with power or hot water. It was super beautiful and peaceful and we're definitely thinking of coming back.

The cabin was a lot nicer than I expected. The only electrical thing to work was the fridge (thank goodness)! Otherwise the generator for the solar panel was completely drained and none of the outlets/lights/ other appliances worked. Still quite luxurious to have actual beds, running water, and a lovely deck with Adirondack chairs. Also beware of the wasps should anyone be particularly sensitive.

For a place that had zero electricity working, it was lovely. Enjoyed every minute with family.

Hirz Cabin is awesome! Was a little tricky finding our way down to the lake from the cabin, on foot at least, but it's not bad once you figure it out.
