A quiet stay, easy to get to with mountains around the cabin. Stayed fairly cool inside. Don't use Google maps if you're coming from Salida.

The Upper Crossing Guard Station is a wonderful basecamp for all sorts of adventures in the northern San Luis Valley. One of my favorites no matter what time of year I've gone. Easy to get to with only a mile of dirt road to access the cabin. My wife ( who has mobility issues) especially loves the advantages of a full bathroom inside the cabin instead of an outhouse although it's not as big an issue for myself. Noticed very minimal mice activity but I would always recommend not leaving anything out overnight like dirty dishes or any food.
