About Shady Lake Campground

Shady Lake is closed to horses and all Off Highway Vehicles (OHV). Visitors are encouraged to access the Forest Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) to identify routes where OHV activities are allowed on the Forest. Shady Lake makes an excellent base camp for those who wish to participate in such activities. Guests are welcome to trailer their machines to and from the recreation area and park in proximity to Shady Lake Recreation area.  Shady Lake is a 25-acre lake constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1937 along the Saline River in Polk County. The recreation area is home to four camp loops with a total of 54 campsites, site amenities ranging from basic amenities to full service campsites with sewage, water, and 20/30/50 amp electrical connections. Currently, only 17 campsites are available for reservations. All remaining campsites are open on a first-come, first-serve basis. Day use activities are allowed, as well. For a small monetary payment forest guests can enter the area and encounter a mass of recreational opportunities such as camping, hiking, mountain biking, non-motorized boating, fishing, swimming, restroom amenities, warm showers, flush toilets, potable water, overlooks, picnic pavilions, and pure relaxation.America the Beautiful National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Passes are honored at Shady Lake Recreation Area. Visit this website for more information and instructions on how to use the pass - https://store.usgs.gov/recreational-passesLoop A Reconstruction Project was completed in 2026. The project was funded solely through Great American Outdoor Act (GAOA) monies and resulted in the construction of nine, fully accessible ADA campsites with full-service capabilities. Loop A bathhouse, an original CCC structure, was restored to remove vandalism and repair broken support beams. A brand new vault toilet was installed to support day users. As part of the improvements to the sites, new utilities were installed to provide potable drinking water and waste management. Please note, the map provided does not show an accurate road layout for Loop A. Please see photo attachment of the campground layout.

What Guests Are Saying

Shady Lake Campground is a peaceful and beautiful spot, ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts, with RV sites offering essential amenities like water, electricity, and sewer. Many visitors appreciate the remote setting and the opportunity for hiking and swimming. However, some facilities, such as showers and lake access, could use improvement, and there is limited connectivity.

We have been going to Shady Lake for years and love it. It is always so peaceful. Sometimes we take our 5 grandkids and they have a great time.

I love camping here, I’ve been camping here since I was a kid. This was my dogs first camping experience and I think he really enjoyed it. Plenty of shade and cold water near by to cool down in.

Shady Lake is a beautiful little US Forest Service Lake and campground. It has only been recently that reservations can be made at this campground. They have nine RV campsites right on the lake with concrete pads plus water, electricity and sewer. They have three other loops that are more primitive, but many have electricity and some have water. The FS has begun making improvements to the campground, but one thing that is needed is several sets ofsteps down to the lake for easier access. Currently is difficult to get down to the lake from the campground. It has somewhat of a trail that runs along the lake, but it needs to be improved. This campground is very remote, but most FS campgrounds are. Many of the more famous trails in Arkansas are located in this area. It would make a great base camp.

The showers and toilets were all in one room. There was only 1 regular and one handicap shower, several changing rooms but all was outdated and could have been a little cleaner even though the campgrounds just opened up for the year. There were no outlets to use a blower or an electric razor. There was no phone or internet service so you were very isolated. This campground is not a place that I would go back to.

We came with a scout troop. Our camping sites were clean and in good condition. Our scouts managed to hike and swim during our weekend. We had a good time and thank the Ranger for his interest. We have more to do next time.
