Sentinel Campground

Spent 4 nights here. Beautiful location and the campground has awesomely huge sites, but there was absolutely zero presence from the rangers despite the ranger station being literally right next door. Which was alarming and frustrating, because every night included multiple sites getting visits from bears and/or obscenely crowded sites partying well past midnight.

We had a wilderness permit and wanted to stay near Road's End. The ranger in the visitor's center gave up a list of open sites and explained how to reserve the site over the phone. I received my American the Beautiful discount as well! Thank you very much!

We love sentinel campground. It is beautiful, the sites are spacious, and it is just an amazing place. There really needs to be a campground host though or someone on site after hours with that many campers at such a popular destination. Fire regulations were not being followed, and park rangers said they could not do anything since they were not there in the evenings. Also, be aware that many people are not prepared to camp in bear country and there is a ton of activity right now. At our recent August stay, we were woken up 3+ times every night by car alarms and bear horns as people attempted to scare of black bears from raiding their camps. Bears are there and came through our camp, but went on their merry way as our camp was clean. I know rangers try hard to prevent bears from getting people food and educate people, but it was an issue every single night, multiple times a night, that people were not storing scented items properly or not cleaning up properly. We left early because it was exhausting to be constantly woken up to screaming and alarms. It is too bad as it is really one of the most beautiful campgrounds I have ever stayed in.

We were told by friends that King's Canyon was a must see, being one of the deepest canyons in the USA. They compared it to Yosemite as it also has granite walls, but we found it to be nothing like Yosemite in grandeur. We did hike to Mist Falls from Road's End and were pleasantly surprised to see the very scenic waterfall still rushing, albeit without the "mist" during the very dry month of August. The King's River had many swimming/wading pools even at this late date and the cold water was very refreshing, cleansing, and instrumental in lowering our body heat during the 90 degree days. Bears were active coming right through Sentinel Campground creating a new year's eve-like uproar from the many tent campers trying to scare them away. While we enjoyed our time there, we will probably not be back as there are still so many other places we want to visit.

Great campground close to the river. It was very hot during the day so we made the trek up to the Sequoia to cool off and would come back and swim in the water.
We saw bears and deer by our campsite.

There is a restaurant and small store nearby as well.
