What Guests Are Saying
Hosmer Grove Campground offers a beautiful, quiet setting with stunning birdwatching opportunities and easy access to Haleakalā National Park. Campers appreciate the clean facilities, friendly rangers, and the convenience of a nature trail nearby. However, the campground lacks running water, and some facilities show signs of neglect, with issues like limited level parking and unpleasant odors from bathrooms. Overall, it serves as a great base for experiencing the park's breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

Open and clean campsite. Stargazing was exceptional. Lovely nature trail with lookout spots was just steps from the campsite, as was vehicle parking (though another camper's car alarm went off a few times). The drive to the summit for sunrise was delightfully quick when starting from the campsite. A couple of Nene greeted us in the morning as we were packing up camp.

Camped here the night before hiking Sliding Sands. Convenient and quiet, with a light rain to make things interesting!

Hosmer grove is a beautiful space to camp- small, quiet, a little pocket of well cared for openness tucked within the woods. Beautiful. I will be back for more time there- so many trails to explore! Thank you to the parks and rec people for caring for these spaces so we can enjoy them. ❤️

Upon arriving at the gate, the park rangers are very welcoming and informative about how to navigate the campground and the national park itself. My reservation site was clean and ready to use. I’ve stayed overnight numerous times, the quality of the campground is consistent, and there will be more sleepovers in the future. Although Haleakala is mostly tropical, just bear in mind temperatures are going to fluctuate rather quickly, so layer up when you want to go hiking and bring the appropriate sleeping gear when you want to sleep. Have fun and stay safe in Haleakalā National Park.

The campground was peaceful and clean. There was a pair of NeNe that followed us around while we set up camp and curled up In front of the tent to sleep after. I highly recommend doing the sunrise viewing while you’re in the park. Park staff were also friendly and helpful.

The walk that starts right at the campground is very nice and yes, it gets cold at night so bring some warm socks! Well kept and a great outdoor experience, can highly recommend it!

Toilets are incredibly smelly now, and the stench drifts into the campsite. Our site was as far away from the bathrooms as possible and you could smell the toilets from our tent at night. Other than that the reservation system has definitely helped keep the whole "party" scene that had developed before the reservation system had been implemented.

From Kahului it is 28 miles of scenic drive along the Haleakala Highway 37 to 377, but the winding road makes the drive pretty slow. Allow at least 1 hour 45 minutes from Kahului to the entrance station of the Park. You can stop in Pukalani for shopping or fast food.
Hosmer Grove Campground is accessed via Haleakala Highway (HI-37), which connects to HI-377, approximately 28 miles from Kahului.
