What Guests Are Saying
Hosmer Grove Campground offers a beautiful, quiet setting with stunning birdwatching opportunities and easy access to Haleakalā National Park. Campers appreciate the clean facilities, friendly rangers, and the convenience of a nature trail nearby. However, the campground lacks running water, and some facilities show signs of neglect, with issues like limited level parking and unpleasant odors from bathrooms. Overall, it serves as a great base for experiencing the park's breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

Nice campsite, loved hiking the crater. Sunrise was unreal and into the crater was just as amazing! So glad we were camped close by and the sunrise was included in our stay. Only subtracted one star because the bathrooms were stinky, but that’s kinda expected. Also, as mentioned by others, we camped November 19/20 and it was very cold getting up at 5-5:30 to go for sunrise. We were prepared with warm sleeping bags (rated to -9) for our overnights and down jackets, gloves and hat for sunrise. We were so happy to have the warm gear at this time of year and that elevation.

Facilities were good, sites kind of sloped but manageable, grill provided. Great location - beautiful nature walk nearby. While it was great to be so close to the crater's rim (we were heading out on a 3 day backpacking trip of the entire trail the next day), what was unfortunate was that there was a large group that stayed up all night long and kept us all awake. We kept thinking they would go to bed by 2am but it didn't happen. This clouded the experience, especially with a 10 mile hike in the morning. They were having fun - which is great, don't get me wrong I love to let loose a bit - but consideration of other campers is appreciated, especially when the sites are so close together. And there was no ranger in sight which is really unfortunate.

This was one of the better campgrounds in any National Park that I camped at.
The ground was clean and comfortable for a tent setup and luckily it wasn’t very crowded. The restroom facility and water source were clean and well maintained.
I will absolutely recommend this campground to anyone traveling to Haleakala.

It is a perfect place to enjoy a beautiful sky. The bathrooms are clean and it has cooking shelter. Be prepared it can get pretty cold at night.

Great location. Well marked so it was easy to find at dusk which is when we arrived. Friendly campers there too. Check in was a little difficult as we didn't quite know where to check in after hours without another camper pointing it out. Would be great if Recreation.gov added that as a feature to their app.

Most camping areas have a slight grade to them. Facilities are nice but it did rain a lot on us. Perfect sleeping temp in September

Beautiful area! There are two main hiking trails, both worth the hike. Picnic table and grill to yourself. Highly recommend staying especially if you are going to see the sunset or sunrise. You are close enough to the summit that you won't be spending hours climbing that steep switch back road. I do recommend going to the top about 1.5 hours before watching the sun. It fills up about an hour before. Also altitude sickness is real. I needed some "down time" in the vehicle to acclimate. so i could throughly enjoy the experience. It was cold at night, but not extreme, but it also wasn't windy. The only downside is if you are staying in a vehicle, know that there are only two spots that are flat - the very first one and last. The parking is on a hill. So plan accordingly. No assigned parking, just your tent area. On that, make sure to check in or you will be charged a fee. If no one is available, they do have a drop box with instructions on how to sign in.

Location was good. Facility was clean and good. There were many flying bugs everywhere. They didn't bite but very annoying.

From Kahului it is 28 miles of scenic drive along the Haleakala Highway 37 to 377, but the winding road makes the drive pretty slow. Allow at least 1 hour 45 minutes from Kahului to the entrance station of the Park. You can stop in Pukalani for shopping or fast food.
Hosmer Grove Campground is accessed via Haleakala Highway (HI-37), which connects to HI-377, approximately 28 miles from Kahului.
