Tarpons Roost Cabin

This cabin is by far the best recreation.gov or private cabin we have ever stayed in:
=> It is brand new, with all the amenities in great condition.
=> It is in an amazing location with stunning views.
=> It is lovingly tended by helpful BLM staff.
We will absolutely be coming back -- no doubt about it.

But we need you all to know that bear safety is an important concern at this cabin. The rangers mentioned that there had been several bear sightings in the area, and were setting up cameras to gather information on bear movements. On our second day we watched through the cabin window as a miscreant, juvenile black bear appeared and started licking at the smooshed bugs on the grill and mirrors of our vehicle. All our food (and toiletries) had been moved into the cabin, so we don't think he was trying to get into the vehicle. But in the process of crawling around our car, the bear broke off our passenger side mirror, which was not cheap to repair. We set off our car alarm, which scare him off, and neither the bear nor we were hurt.

The rangers told us they plan to capture and relocate this particular bear, but know that this is bear country. Good bear practices are essential at this location. Carefully secure all food and other attractants, and always be aware of your surroundings.

Other logistics to consider:
=> There is no water at the cabin, so bring your own. There is a spring down at the Sacagawea Monument, but it is several miles down a rough road.
=> There was plenty of firewood at the cabin, which was good, because even in early August the nights were cold.
=> The main gravel road that goes over the Lemhi Pass takes you most of the way to the cabin. It was fine with our 2WD SUV in summer, but be careful not to let Google Maps take you on side roads, as they get rough in a hurry. The last two miles to the cabin are rough, but doable.
=> Kitchen amenities are excellent, but bring your own propane.

Bottom line: this cabin is fabulous, but be careful.

Great access to hiking/walking trails and hunting access. Easy approach from the east, but very doable in dry conditions from the west, as well, in AWD vehicles.

This cabin is absolutely amazing! It was clean, comfortable, ergonomic and refreshing. We can't wait to visit again.

Super nice brand new cabin! The bottom bunks are queen size with very nice mattresses- no sleeping pad necessary, just bring a sheet!

**There are no mugs, only plastic cups, so if you want a hot drink bring your on or bring some to leave at the cabin!

There was a lot more snow than we expected which was nice.

Be aware that the wood stove is very small and you'll need to get up often to reload or stoke it, but the cabin retains heat well!

Be sure to split wood to replace what you used for the next person!
