Great location despite the smoke. Very few but very friendly hunters came by. Cabin was outfitted beyond out expectations, and very comfortable. We spent a great weekend there. Great access to hiking/walking trails and hunting access. Easy approach from the east, but very doable in dry conditions from the west, as well, in AWD vehicles.
We were a little disturbed to find to game cameras to the west of the cabin pointed at the front and rear door areas. They were not labeled "Govt Property," and felt a little intrusive, especially not knowing if they were just the BLM monitoring vandalism or if they were put there by a private party. Either way we weren't happy to find them there. Would have given five stars if not for the cameras.

This cabin is by far the best recreation.gov or private cabin we have ever stayed in:
=> It is brand new, with all the amenities in great condition.
=> It is in an amazing location with stunning views.
=> It is lovingly tended by helpful BLM staff.
We will absolutely be coming back -- no doubt about it.
But we need you all to know that bear safety is an important concern at this cabin. The rangers mentioned that there had been several bear sightings in the area, and were setting up cameras to gather information on bear movements. On our second day we watched through the cabin window as a miscreant, juvenile black bear appeared and started licking at the smooshed bugs on the grill and mirrors of our vehicle. All our food (and toiletries) had been moved into the cabin, so we don't think he was trying to get into the vehicle. But in the process of crawling around our car, the bear broke off our passenger side mirror, which was not cheap to repair. We set off our car alarm, which scare him off, and neither the bear nor we were hurt.
The rangers told us they plan to capture and relocate this particular bear, but know that this is bear country. Good bear practices are essential at this location. Carefully secure all food and other attractants, and always be aware of your surroundings.
Other logistics to consider:
=> There is no water at the cabin, so bring your own. There is a spring down at the Sacagawea Monument, but it is several miles down a rough road.
=> There was plenty of firewood at the cabin, which was good, because even in early August the nights were cold.
=> The main gravel road that goes over the Lemhi Pass takes you most of the way to the cabin. It was fine with our 2WD SUV in summer, but be careful not to let Google Maps take you on side roads, as they get rough in a hurry. The last two miles to the cabin are rough, but doable.
=> Kitchen amenities are excellent, but bring your own propane.
Bottom line: this cabin is fabulous, but be careful.

From Salmon travel south-east on Highway 28 for about 20 miles before turning east at Tendoy. Follow the Agency Creek Road east for about 12 miles to Lemhi Pass. Take the first right and follow road south for about two miles before reaching the cabin.
During the wintertime the cabin can be accessed from the Warm Springs Creek groomed snowmobile route or from the ungroomed Agency Creek Road. Maps of the area and snowmobile routes are available at the Public Lands Center in Salmon.
Major access to Tarpons Roost Cabin is via Highway 28, which is approximately 20 miles from Salmon.
Policies & Rules
Arrival & departure
- The cabin is locked, and guests will receive a padlock code upon reservation confirmation.
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
Utilities
- Guests are required to bring their own water for all uses.
Safety & rules
- No propane fuel is available at this location.
- Guests should inform themselves about bear awareness and safety regarding water and weather before visiting.
- Guests are required to pack out all garbage and food.
- There is a risk of hantavirus exposure and rodent poison in the cabin; guests should be aware.
- Visitor groups must clean and disinfect the cabin after use.
Fires & fuel
- Firewood is available only from October 1 to June 15; it is not available during the summer months.
- To avoid pest spread, use local firewood and do not transport firewood from other locations.
