About Sundance

Located at the foothills of Bear Lodge Mountain Range, Sundance Horse Camp is a favorite among horse enthusiasts. It makes an ideal base for enjoying recreation and relaxation in Black Hills National Forest. Expansive grassy areas offer scenic views of the valley and surrounding hills. The Sundance Trailhead is located adjacent to the campground, providing access to miles of non-motorized trails suitable for hiking, biking, and equestrian use. The campground was completely renovated in 2025 using funds generated from campground fees. These updates enhanced access for modern-sized trailers, improved fire safety, reduced maintenance costs, and ensured that all sites meet federal accessibility requirements.

One corral per campsite, period. Even if almost no one is there. NO horses in the camping area.

Only camped one night (a Sunday) and were the only campers there! But the campground was amazingly well laid out. Site we chose was very level and others seemed the same. Very well maintained and clean. All sites were sunny so if someone wanted shade they would be out of luck.

Great stay. While our site wasn't as leveled, we still made it work. Restrooms were clean and well maintained. We had a great stay with quiet nights.

It was great. I was the only one there so I had the entire campground to myself. It is on a slope so there is a good view of the surrounding are and there is a good trail up the mountain from the campground.

We just absolutely loved this equestrian campground! The views were stunning, the air was fresh and clean, and my site (#001) was nice and level side to side. I did have to level it somewhat from front to back but no big deal. There are lots of really good multi-use trails right nearby, and the little town of Sundance was very charming. From this camp you have an easy trip to Spearfish, Deadwood, Sturgis, and Rushmore. It's a wonderful little campground, and we're very happy to have had the chance to stay there.
