About La Prele Guard Station

La Prele Guard Station is located south of Douglas, Wyoming in Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. It was originally built as a remote ranger station in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was converted into a work center when the La Prele Ranger District was discontinued in 1956. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Today, it provides a unique lodging experience and delightful spot for guests seeking recreation and relaxation in south central Wyoming. The guard station is open from late May or early June through late October each year and is accessible by car except after snow events at the beginning and end of the season. Weather and road closures may impact opening and closure dates. Many modern conveniences are provided, but guests will need to bring a few of their own supplies to make their stay comfortable. We try to keep a supply of firewood available to guests but there is no guarantee. The site now has limited propane lighting. Please note that due to the historic nature of the facility, pets, candles or other flame producing items are not permitted in the cabin.

What Guests Are Saying

La Prele Guard Station is a lovely getaway for those seeking solitude, with ample hiking and fishing opportunities nearby. The area is rich in wildlife, and recent updates to the cabin, including new appliances and electricity, enhance the experience. While it lacks potable water and phone service, visitors appreciate the low rental price and the chance to maintain a historic building.

We’ve gone for several years now. It’s a really lovely place if you’re looking for some time away from others and to disconnect. We mostly go for the hiking and fishing. There a few trails and creeks nearby, and a LOT of options if you’re willing to do a little exploring, most within an hour’s drive. It helps to have an app that tells you what’s public and private as the whole area is kind of checkerboarded that way, and it can get confusing (although there are some signs). You’ll see lots of wildlife in the area: antelope, chipmunks, owls, hawks, deer, elk, hummingbirds. They’ve done some updates the last couple years, and the new couch and electricity is appreciated. When they say no potable water, you can do dishes and shower with the water, but you need to bring your own drinking water. It’s so isolated (about an hour from Douglas) that there’s no phone service, but that suits us just fine. It also isn’t like a regular rental, in that they expect you to fully clean it before you leave. We’ve always thought it was a small trade off for the inexpensive rental price, and kind of take pride in getting to help maintain a historic building. It sleeps 6, but if you have a bigger group, there’s a campground about a mile further down the road that could accommodate the more adventurous of your group. It’s a great spot. We’ve recommended it to so many people.

Our stay at the La Prele 07/01/2023 thru 07/05/2023 was very relaxing, very off the grid. Don't expect any cell phone service which was fine for us. Very pleased with the cabin.

Nearby creeks and trails are fun. The cabin was ok except it needs a thorough cleaning.

Actually due to a mixup on dates, our fault, we did not go. But this would have been the 5th or the 6th time to rent the facility and we love it.
