About Markham Springs

Markham Springs Campground is set on the Black River in a scenic and historic recreation area in the southwestern corner of Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest. The area provides access to multiple trails and recreational opportunities. Markham Springs Recreation Area gets its name from former owner, M. J. Markham, who acquired the property in 1901 and operated a lumber mill at the site until the 1930s. The Fuchs House, a five-bedroom concrete and native stone home, also sits on the property, along with a neighboring mill. At times, it is also available for rent.

We enjoyed our time there, mostly because of the friends we camped with. We stayed at a group site. We shared a utility post for electric. We wanted to have our awnings facing each other and it was a little difficult setting up. There was a lot of grassy area where the kids could run around, but there were a lot of gopher holes. Some of them were large and deep. I fell down when my foot went in one of the holes. We noticed that the other camping looks were not maintained at all. Sites were overgrown and looked abandoned. It was a shame because it is a beautiful park. And you could see how nice those camping areas could be.

The Camp Hostess was very friendly and helpful. Other guest were friendly and quite. The double site was large and shaded. My only complaint was that the fire pit grate was so high that even in the lowest position, it was hard to get enough coals to cook.

Years ago, this park was a GEM!!!! No longer. It's very run down and in need of a lot of help! No dump station anymore???? The beautiful spring pond that used to fuel the paddle wheel has a break in the dam , some of the electric sites are in disrepair. So sad because this was once a GEM. The river loop sites are in much
need of care.

Been coming here since I was a kid. Have seen the park in better shape, but it looks like it is finally starting to improve. The bones are here: valley, river, trails, spring, toilet, shower, water, and a loop with electric. Wish the old spring mill wheel was still turning like when I was a kid. Historic mill house has been restored and is available to rent now! So cool! Love this place with all of my heart. Please keep improving it, us forest service! This place is amazing!

Campsites are well kept. Nice quiet place to camp. Bathrooms had no paper, and the women's had the door left open for all the bugs in the world to enter. Women's shower was dirty, also.

I was disappointed with the few vault toilets and only two showers available for the whole camps. While it was ok the weeds were invasive
