About Fuchs House

In the late 1930s, Rudolph Fuchs built a five bedroom concrete and native stone house for his family, and also built the present wheel house to produce electricity for his needs. Power was obtained by building a dam in a semi-circle below a large spring forming a small pond. The water was to pour through a chute on the wheel to produce electricity; however, electricity arrived to the site before the wheel ever needed to do its job. The area had an undershot wheel providing power to a grist mill in the late 19th century.

Fuchs House offers a beautiful setting with spacious accommodations and helpful air conditioning, particularly appreciated during the hot July weather. Guests enjoyed nearby scenic hikes and found the location convenient for exploring local attractions like Sam A Baker State Park. While some mentioned issues with water and uncomfortable mattresses, overall experiences were positive, with many planning to return.

Beautiful setting! Tons of room in the cabin. Window air conditioning was very helpful as it was really hot in July. We brought our own water. Beautiful hike right next to the cabin with scenic overlooks. We were surprised that it wasn't very buggy. Black river was muddy, but went floating down Current river- gorgeous bluffs and cool clear water. Sam A Baker state park was a great find as well. We loved our stay.

Really loved the house and location. It was great to have a short but interesting hike just outside the door, and it's only a 13 mile drive to the Wappapello trailhead of the Ozark Trail. The only bad surprise was a sign saying that the water was not drinkable and we should bring some. Needed to have that information before we arrived! As it was, we boiled water and were fine. The house is a bit better equipped than described, for instance, there's a microwave that works and a coffee maker, with filters, that works if you babysit it (the carafe doesn't really fit). Also, the queen-sized beds described are actually king-sized beds; makes a big difference when you're bringing your own linens. Fortunately, our queen-sized sheets fit ok on the double beds. Bottom line: we had a great stay and will be back with more family members next time.

I absolutely love this place. The only criticism is that they need new mattresses. The beds are uncomfortable but otherwise a 10 out of 10

Great house&location. The road leading to the house was underwater when we got there, that was on a Sunday. They came out Monday and cleared the road. The house is not very clean. Floors are not mopped, cobwebs and dust everywhere. Mattresses
are different sizes than what they say on the
website and they’ve seen better days.
Overall good value for the money. Would go again.
