Nice campground with tall trees so lots of shade. Lots of room in between each other. Would definitely stay again.

The power pedestal at site 34 had a voltage of 130V which kept knocking my surge protector off-line. So we had to sleep without ac power.

This is an outstanding campground with friendly and accommodating hosts. Large wooded sites, many on the water. Clean private washrooms and showers. All of the Corp of Engineers campgrounds we visited were great, but this one stands out.

When we first arrived, we thought we’d found the best COE campground we’ve ever stayed at. The staff is awesome—friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The campground itself is spotless, the sites are spacious, and the scenery along the river is nothing short of beautiful. Add in the fact that every site is full hook-up, and it seemed like Gunter Hill had everything a camper could ask for.
So why only three stars?
THE SMELL.
There’s a nearby paper plant that unleashes one of the most offensive assaults on the olfactory senses I’ve ever experienced. It smells like raw sewage mixed with something chemical—and once it rolls in, it stays. What started as a dream stop quickly turned into a challenge of endurance.
We closed windows, ran filters, lit candles, even cracked open bottles of Pine-Sol for backup. At one point, we joked about breaking out the N-95 masks, but honestly, they probably wouldn’t have helped much.
It’s a real shame because everything else about Gunter Hill is absolutely top-notch. If the wind is right or the plant isn’t active, this could easily be a 5-star campground. But as it stands, that smell is impossible to ignore—and that’s why it’s only three stars from us.
