About Williwaw Campground

Williwaw Campground, an idyllic area, sits beside Williwaw Creek near the town of Girdwood, Alaska. The campground boasts prime fishing, hiking and wildlife watching all within the Portage Valley. Next to the campground is the Williwaw Salmon Viewing Area, a top-notch spot for salmon viewing. In August, visitors can see these fish spawning in impressive numbers through the translucent waters. The area is a great place to view numerous glaciated valleys and the Portage Glacier. Over the past 80 years, the glacier calved large icebergs into Portage Lake, located just east of the campground.

I’ve driven past Williwaw campground for 30 plus years without ever staying. We wanted to try a new campground and decided on staying here. Williwaw has to be one of the nicest (if not the nicest) campgrounds in the state that we’ve stayed S plus 2 days of blue skies and great weather made for great hikes through the trails. Salmon fish viewing was also great. We will be returning for sure.

Always a nice visit even with lots of rain. Campsites are paved part way which helps keep the sites clean. Nice sturdy picnic tables and good fire rings. Only 4 stars because the potable water was really rusty and not something we felt comfortable drinking.

Really nice campground. Great location. Good distance & separation between sites. Good well water & pit toilets okay. Nearby road noise. Disrespectful camper nearby ran generator too late & too early. Overall a recommended place to camp.

Neat campground and the trail to see a BAZILLION spawning salmon is worth the short walk. The Trail of Blue Ice is well kept and scenic.

This was a beautiful location. We especially liked the salmon viewing platform and the proximity to the Portage Glacier valley. The only thing lacking were showers.

loved our campsite - beautiful, quiet, roomy, and the mom moose with two babies were quite an added bonus.

Sites are paved and level. Our site was partially shade. Nice fire pit and picnic table. Pit toilets were clean. Dumpsters on each end of CG. Hand pump for water. Trail access to Visitor Center. Great place to overnight before going to Whittier to catch ferry to Valdez. Highly recommend making reservations.

The campground was okay for a night. Our campsite was quite shaded, so there was hardly any sunlight. The toilets were very basic and there was no running water. Overall, it was fine for a short stay, but don’t expect too many amenities.
