Laughton Glacier Cabin

Very well maintained shelter near an open section of the Skagway River. Be sure to check out the side trails and bench down by the water. Cabin gets excellent early sun so make sure you pack coffee and a mosquito net for a morning on the front porch!

What an incredible place! A beautiful cabin, a fun and easy hike, and one of the most fascinating ecosystems you’ll ever experience. The reward at the end is a truly breathtaking glacier that never fails to leave me in awe.

For the past three years, one of my favourite traditions has been spending the evening by the river, curled up with the cabin’s log books, reading stories and memories left by visitors from around the world. It added so much charm and connection to the experience. When I returned for my fourth visit, I discovered the original log books had been removed for historical preservation. I completely understand why, but I truly hope copies are placed back in the cabin one day, it was one of the most memorable parts of every stay.

I can’t recommend this adventure enough. It’s perfect for solo travellers, couples, friends, and even families with young children. Whether you’re there for the scenery, the peaceful cabin, or the unforgettable glacier, it’s an experience you’ll be talking about long after you leave.

Laughton Cabin is always a magical summer family trip for us! The cabin was clean, well equipped with a broom, ax, and heater. The porcupine family came for their nightly visits and awoke our son sleeping in a hammock with their scurrying around beneath him! The stove worked perfectly to heat up the cabin before we went to bed; the directions booklet for it is great! We hiked up the left moraine this year. Happy trails!

The Laughton Glacier cabin was the best reset. I loved the amenities, the oil stove was easy to use and had great directions in the booklet. The deck and the bench were great especially when sitting outside being able to rest and reset while staying dry even when it was raining! I will be going as much as I can next season!

Cabin was so peaceful nestled beside the river. We had bluebird days with an incredible view of glacier. We will definitely be back!

This is probably the best place to provide information for the new comer like we were. We were trying to find out what is #1 stove oil (for heating) before we went but couldn’t find it anywhere online.

We were at Haines the night before and we asked 5+ people and only 2 of them could tell me it is #1 diesel and we should be able to buy it from gas station. Unfortunately the gas stations were already closed and we ends up getting the coleman camp fuel from Outfitter Sporting Goods. I still don't know what is #1 diesel as the gas station sells #2 diesel for car and truck. LUCKILY THE COLEMAN CAMP FUEL ALSO WORK.

The cabin is mainly maintained by campers like us and it is clean. There is a heating stove inside, so you could cooking on it if you don’t have other cooking equipments (or you can use the fire pit outside.) There is an instruction book for the stove and visitor log books from previous campers. They provide useful information.

There is a big axe for chopping wood so you don’t need to bring one as instructed. There is another fire pit near the river so that you could keep yourself warm sitting near the river. There are firewood near the cabin and I guess the U.S. Forest Service prepare that but it is getting less and less. We couldn't find the wooden box for food storage (the information said there was), so you might want to use an alternative solution like hanging your food high using a rope or something. There are small streams nearby so if you have water filtering equipment, you don't have to bring that much water like us. 😅

We have not met any bear near the cabin when we were there (but we met one while waiting for train pick up), but we saw a porcupine in the morning. The glacier is nice and there is enough time to hike up to the base and stand at the bottom of the glacier, just make sure you pick a safe path and don’t stand too close or under the ice. We have heard loud bangs when ice melted and broke off.
