About Russian River

Beginning Aug. 15, 2025, the Russian River Campground will be closed to the Public for construction.Construction crews will rebuild and widen one mile of the access road, making it more stable and resistant to frost heaves. During the closure, all vehicle and pedestrian access will be restricted and campground reservations on Recreation.gov will be unavailable.  Russian River Campground is perched between the Russian and Kenai Rivers in south-central Alaska. It lies within driving distance of two main population centers, 110 mi south of Anchorage and 40 mi east of Soldotna, surrounded by the Chugach National Forest and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.Each year, this area is visited by over 100,000 people who recreate at the Russian River Campground, Ferry Access Site, Sportsman's Boat Launch, Russian Lakes Trail and K'beq Site. Hiking, biking and fishing are popular pastimes.

It is a terrible system for reservations at the Russian River. I have tried getting on at 6 AM in Alaska and rarely get the June dates. The people I know who get dates have all their friend and even their employees all on at the same time and all trying to get them. Sometimes they get half a dozen. In literally a second the campsites are gone.

And the worst part is the people who book those don’t even have to show up until the third day. We have been there and seen campsites during peak season empty for 2 nights on Wed and Thur just so a person could show up on friday for one night. And the forest service will not give their spots away until late in the day after the second night they have missed. Which that is not the case at the other campsites. What a waste of an amazing resource. I have the opportunity to travel during the week people are blocking my opportunity just to have a Friday night booked.

I have spoken to people who thought it was funny that they start booking the campsite early just so they could be In line to book the following 3 nights at that site. They had no intention of using the first booking. Then only 1 of the 3 nights booked will get released for people like me to use.

We left early, campsite was so smoky we couldnt breathe and everything was covered in ash. Was forced evacuations the day after we left. I read they chose not to fight the fire early as it was small and not headed anywhere important. Than the wind changed and things got crazy. Just another poor management job for Alaska ruining it for former residents just like the 1 halibut rule.

Policies & Rules

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
