Alamo Primitive Campground is isolated and situated in a stunning area where you are surrounded by beauty. There was no signage on the main road so you need to go slow. I was a bit worried when I saw the warning sign regarding smugglers but we had no issues. It was the perfect place to see the night sky and experience the quietness and beauty of nature!

The campsite was GORGEOUS and visually exactly what we expected. Pit toilet and no water/electric, but everything was clean and well maintained.
However, for us personally we did not feel safe. There is no Internet or cell service. There is a very clear sign at the entrance calling out that smuggling and illegal entry can occur due to proximity to the border. Bad on us for not fully considering how we would feel about this in conjunction with the remoteness and lack of communication ability.
On Saturday night we were the only ones in the campground when a black car pulled into the trailhead parking spot and idled/parked there for over an hour without setting up anything for camping. It was a solo individual. Could have been totally innocuous, but felt odd given that it wasn't a dedicated overnight spot and all the other sites were empty. It's also at least 10 min down a dirt road to get there, so felt like a strange choice of it was an unplanned pitstop during a multi-day drive. Again, could have been nothing, but for us, we felt unsafe - potentially like the car was waiting for someone/thing. Another camping group arrived after 1-2hrs and we took the opportunity to pack up and leave once we weren't alone with the solo car.
So, if you're going to book here I'd just recommend considering your own personal comfort level. It really is a beautiful setting!

Don’t let the 3 miles of unpaved road scare you away! We did it on Harley’s. The road was not that bad, a little bit of washboards. The pit toilets were nice and clean. Campsites had picnic tables and a grill, were well kept. We took the the 1.8 mile hike to the old homestead and corral. Beautiful morning hike! I would highly recommend this camp spot!

There is no road sign along the highway for the Alamo Canyon Road
- Alamo Canyon Road is located at milepost 65.5 on the east side of AZ State Route 85, on the north side of the concrete bridge that crosses Alamo Wash. Alamo Canyon Campground is located at the end of the Alamo Canyon Road. The road is a three-mile graded dirt road suitable for most cars.
- From the North (Phoenix): take I-10 East to AZ SR 85 south. Or, take I-10 east to AZ SR 347 south, to AZ 238 west, to AZ SR 85 south.
- From the East (Tucson): take AZ SR 86 to Why, then turn left on AZ SR 85, heading south.
- From the West (Yuma/California): follow I-8 to Gila Bend or I-10 to Buckeye, to AZ SR 85 south.
- From the South (Sonoyta, Mexico): travel north towards Lukeville, AZ on Mexico Rt. 2. Once across the border into the United States, continue north onto AZ SR 85.
Alamo Canyon Primitive Campground is accessible via AZ State Route 85, which is located approximately 3 miles from the campground at milepost 65.5. Major access roads include I-10 and I-8, which connect to AZ SR 85 for travelers from various directions.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
