We did 2 nights of car camping with our 5 year old, and had a wonderful time. The hosts were friendly, the campground was clean and well-kept, our campsite was very spacious, and everything about the weekend was fun. A trail leading to sunset crater passes through the campsite, so you can hike directly from the site to all of the Sunset Crater trails.
One thing to bear in mind is that the campground isn't in or apparently affiliated with the park. I didn't actually care one way or the other, but I didn't realize and was surprised that admission to Sunset Crater Park would be separate. So that's something to be aware of if you're planning to camp and explore the parks.
Broader location is great, too, with a few different national monuments and Flagstaff an easy drive. We'll definitely be back.

This is a beautiful campground. The sites are nicely separated, and the back-ins give you privacy and space. Lots of room to set out chairs in the shade of the beautiful pine trees, or to pitch your tent away from the road. Lots of space to walk a dog all around the area. I love coming here.

Very nice, quiet campground that has little or no cell signal. We put our chairs outside and watched the birds in the campground. A very pleasant day.
