About Bonito Campground (AZ)

Bonito Campground is located 18 mi northeast of Flagstaff, near Sunset Crater/Wupatki National Monument. Elevation is 6.9 ft. Bonito Campground is named for the Bonito Lava Flow which oozed across this high desert plain some 900 years ago. That river of liquid rock, now frozen forever, is just one of the many remnants of volcanic activity which lend an otherwordly appearance to this starkly beautiful place.

Bonito campground is a quiet peaceful area. The campsites are well spaced and the flush toilets are much nicer than the vault toilets at other campgrounds. Durning the daytime the campground is usually very quiet unless you are very unlucky and end up near someone that wants to run their generator all day long. This does happen occasionally but is definitely not the norm. There are numerous mature pine trees and the stars go on forever at night!

Arrived late and had no problems the spot you put your tent on and it’s lava rock or gravel type so it’s not the best for walking around or setting up camp without making the most noise possible. But the campground was quite bathrooms where well maintained and clean.

Beautiful campground. Sites are well spaced and most have concrete pads for picnic tables, grills and fire pits.
Be aware that if you have a camper or van and you book a site on the left side of the road your camper/van will open to the road side.
Definitely recommend this campground and a visit to Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument!

Great campground. We had a group of motorcycles and found ample trees for hammocks and tents. Clean restrooms. No cell service.

Very well run campground, the hosts were wonderful, it was quiet, the land and scenery there are unusual and beautiful. The wind through the pine needles is a sound I'll never forget.

Probably our 10th time camping here. So I kept very clean. Camp hosts very friendly and do a great job communicating with campers. Bathrooms are immaculately cleaned. Great hikes to the O’Leary Peak and Sunset crater national Monument are available.
