We loved our time at the cabin. It makes a great base camp for exploring the area on our mountain bikes.

Love the cabin but the stack for the furnace leaks smoke INTO the cabin. We were smoked out and couldn't stay there. I hope they fix it.

Fernow Cabin is a facility for the hard core outdoorsman/outdoorswoman. It is not an up-to-date luxury facility. So, be prepared to live a pioneer lifestyle when you visit Fernow Cabin. The cabin is located deep in the forest, at the end of a lengthy, dusty, rough road. Expect to spend at least an hour in the dust, ... and the roadway is suitable only for more the more rugged vehicles. 4WD isn't necessary, however, a strong, rugged suspension, certainly.
That said, the location is in the midst of the most spectacular forest and highland of Arizona. For those prepared for the journey, the location yields a welcome respite from the scurrying madness of Phoenix.
Our group arrived late October, at the beginning of the winter season. The crisp, clean air, and blue skies, and the strong, warm sun over the sweeping expanses of canyon lands and ponderosa pine were spectacular. The wood stove in the cabin was a bit of work to maintain, yet, toasty warm. The cabin is well built, holding up well to the cold nights, and well ventilated, allowing good, fresh air to come during warm days. There is a useful refrigerator, somewhat on the small side, and a gas stove. Easy to cook, easy to clean. And a lovely porch. Very family friendly.
