Sawtooth Canyon Campground

About Sawtooth Canyon Campground

Sawtooth Canyon Campground, also know by its nickname “New Jack City,” is located approximately 3 miles west of California Highway 247 and 20 mile south of Barstow, California. In this “Limited” use area there are many different recreation activities: camping, wildlife viewing, hunting, rock climbing, and picnicking. The name "New Jack City" is the most widely used name and originates for the rock climbing community who use the area. However, the historic name for the canyon is “Traer Agua” which means “bring water’. "Sawtooth Canyon” is derived from the resemblance between the ridge line and the outline of a saw blade. There are not open routes of travel in this campground area. OHV vehicles must be trailered in and trailered out, there is not a staging area. Sawtooth Canyon is designated multiple and “Limited” vehicle use. Recreation management guidelines for “Limited” use provides lower intensity, carefully controlled activity to ensure minimal damage to soil, vegetation, wildlife, scenic values, and air quality.

Fantastic for family fun if you want to rough it. Great for daytime hiking. Overnight activities include a fantastic view of the night sky, including watching meteor showers. Be prepared to rough it in a tent or some type of camping vehicle. Public bathrooms available, you need to bring everything else. But, all that is doable because our son even had his wedding and reception out there with about 75 people in attendance. Was beautiful....

A perfect place to spend a quiet day following the sun and the moon. It's ideal for hiking, camping, or car camping—just be prepared for the summer heat and the biting winter winds.
Important Note: While we want everyone to have a great time, please maintain a quiet environment. The Sawtooth area echoes significantly, so sound carries much further here than in other spots. Additionally, this is a 'Pack It In, Pack It Out' location. There are no trash bins provided, so please take all your waste with you when you leave.

Great BLM campground that is free. Pavilions, bbq and fire rings at the campsites. Dino themed playground for the kiddos. 1.5 mile dirt road from the highway to the entrance with a lot of washouts due to recent heavy rain. But still passable. Very quiet.

This place is exactly what you hope for in a BLM campground: quiet, spectacular, and easily accessible.
The Landscape: The rock formations here are unreal—they reminded me of a less crowded, more rugged Joshua Tree. We loved the ability to scramble up the canyon walls and explore the various trails, which offer stunning views, especially at sunset. If you're into photography, the volcanic rock outcroppings provide drama and incredible texture (look up the area known as "New Jack City" for the climbing spots).
The Vibe & Access: True to its reputation, it was peaceful and far enough off the highway to feel remote, yet the "easy in and out" access road was totally manageable for a 2WD vehicle. We appreciated that it was free, first-come, first-served, and the sites were well-spaced, giving us lots of privacy.
Just Know: This is primitive desert camping. Pack in all your water and pack out all your trash, as there are no services besides clean vault toilets. This is a small price to pay for the serenity and dramatic Mojave landscape. Highly recommend it for a quick, adventurous weekend break

We ran into this campsite on our way to 29 palms and decided to stay a night. washboard road in and almost all sites are made for small campers, tents or van life. We had a 26 foot trailer and barely made it in a spot. But it is nice and quiet, the spot we got was not bad at all.
