About Black Mountain Lookout

Black Mountain Lookout remained closed for the 2020 season and is expected to remain closed into 2021. Closure is due to COVID related demands in maintaining a safe environment for our customers and our staff. Black Mountain Lookout is located on the eastern edge of the Beckwourth Ranger District, 10 miles from Highway 395, near Milford, California. The lookout was constructed in 1934 and is a great example of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) architecture. The C-3-type lookout is situated on a single story 10 foot tower and is extremely well-preserved.  The lookout tower is normally available for Memorial Day weekend through October, offering guests a unique lodging experience in Plumas National Forest.

What Guests Are Saying

Black Mountain Lookout offers spectacular views and a unique historical experience, with strong cell service, especially for Verizon users. While there were some minor issues, such as missing USB lantern components and gaps in windows allowing breezes, the overall experience was enjoyable. Guests appreciated the opportunity to leave a spare light bulb for future visitors and found the location memorable despite limited hiking options.

July 11, 2022 Stayed at: 001, Loop: BLACK MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT

The most creature comforts at a fire lookout so far! My wife, dog and I really enjoyed our stay. Quite windy at the top of the peak but not an issue inside the cabin. Having electricity was nice since I forgot to charge the battery to my camera. Road is pretty accessible and most vehicles should be able to make it but high clearance is a plus (we were in my 3rd Gen 4Runner so it wasn't a problem. Lots of fire roads to explore if you are keen on driving around and getting pinstripes.
