What Guests Are Saying

Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained environment with clean restrooms, spacious sites, and close proximity to the stunning Cinder Cone Trail and Butte Lake, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. Many campers appreciated the tranquility and wildlife, as well as the friendly park staff. However, some noted issues with steeply inclined sites, dust from fast-moving vehicles, and limited ranger presence, which could detract from the experience.

Visitors be forewarned: The Lake is VERY low right now. If you've camped there before, know that it's a 100-yard walk past the boat launch to reach the water's edge now, and much of the shore and shallow water is DEEP mud -- not safe for little kids to play on/in; they could literally get stuck/sucked down into the mud. We camped there June 16-18.

Beautiful site next to a lake. Amenities (water) were scarce -- not sure if it was from the extreme drought or park funding issue. Also, the ranger station was closed. If you want more open ranger stations, vote for Democrats.

6 mi of bad dusty road to the campground. No camp host, nor were the parking areas for campers and cars defined. Clearly no camp ground prep. We had been told that the water was operational, but not for flush toilets. Water was turned off without any notice after the first day. Terrible communication or assistance from the park service.

Even though the water level was lower this year due to the drought, Butte Lake and its surrounding areas were still gorgeous! The campsites were nice and spacious, and though the restrooms were not able to be open during our stay, there were still enough amenities that we managed a very enjoyable trip. The staff were incredibly nice and I had a wonderful conversation with one of the rangers about the birds in the area, as well about Cinder Cone and our trip. I would highly reccomend making the hike up Cinder Cone; as daunting as it may seem at first, making it to the top is incredibly rewarding. The inside of the volcano as well as the amazing view of Lassen makes it so worth the effort and it was our favorite part about the stay!
