What Guests Are Saying
Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained environment with clean restrooms, spacious sites, and close proximity to the stunning Cinder Cone Trail and Butte Lake, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. Many campers appreciated the tranquility and wildlife, as well as the friendly park staff. However, some noted issues with steeply inclined sites, dust from fast-moving vehicles, and limited ranger presence, which could detract from the experience.

Overall I liked the site I had. Was big and with lots of spots to put my tent. Flush toilets, no lights in bathroom. Sink for dishes. Each of them seemed a bit uneven, but it's nature. Yes I could see all the sites around me, but each space seemed big.
It was quiet when I was there. I was able to walk to the lake and nearby trails. Though you do get people racing by on the road, headed for the lake.
I do agree with others about the road. Though that is not in the volcanic park part. Of course you still have to go 5 miles to get to the smoother drive. A few times I had to slow way down for how hard it shook. Aside from the walks around there, going out of the park you can reach a store near old station. And the subway lava tubes. Would definitely go and stay again.

Was in the closest site to the lake but still can’t really see it from the campground. Was a louder campground than average.

Be prepared for that long 7 mi Rocky bumpy gravel road to the campsite, but…. You’ll find a spacious campground, most campers are well spread out, the lake (s) are gorgeous, not a bad walk from the campground. And you can probably book a site. It’s much less crowded than Summit. It’s my new go to at Lassen. E had a big hail storm, it was actually fun from my cozy mini van.

I wish I knew how off road like this drive would be before heading here! I think this area was well maintained and nice. Perhaps having a ranger station or something out here would be nice if rangers stay overnight.

The campground is clean and well maintained. There are several lovely hikes close, and Butte Lake is delightful.
Unfortunately, to access the campground, you have to drive down a heavily washboarded Forest Service road. While I have driven down many washboarded roads with no problems, this one is so bad, several things on my trailer broke from all the bumping around.
The park has fixed its section of the road near the campground, and so it’s not the park’s fault. Just be careful if you want to pull a trailer down the Forest Service road accessing Butte Lake campground.

The lack of photos of all the sites led us to be in a space that was very narrow, our trailer was damaged due to the soft ground and narrowness of the trees. The description of the dirt road leading to the campground was sorely lacking. It should have been described as a 6 mile WASHBOARD road. The campground itself was nice.
