The lake and hike are lovely. The 6 mile washboard road to get there is horrible. I don’t mind driving on gravel, but the washboard road to the lake makes me not want to return. It really is that bad. Too bad, because the lake is really beautiful.

Great campground and the staff does an awesome job and keeping the bathrooms clean and trash picked up. Thank you! If only campers observed the speed limit within the campground! Clouds of dust descended on my picnic table multiple times.

People and including the rangers drive way too fast for a campground and create too much dust.
Camp sites were serviceable. Was quiet at night.

We stayed at two sites, B21 the first night and B02 the second and third. B21 is difficult to find! Drive into the area marked group camping and pass that on your left. Follow the B loop until you see a bathroom on the right; B21 is the campsite just below the bathroom and on your right. The driveway is not very level, so camper vans and RV’s may need to use leveling blocks to get it right. The trees were perfect for a single tree hammock hang using a hammock pole for the other end. B21 is farther away from the closer-spaced campsites, giving you a lot of space for a small group or just a lot of space between you and your neighbors. While there are trees, a lot of the campsite is open sky, making for great stargazing. During the day, however, this means the campsite is exposed to the sun, so bring a tarp for shade. B02 has absolutely massive tree trunks that required 3 tree straps to get around one tree!! The slope of the site also means a tougher hang. I tried hanging between two of the behemoth trees but the hang distance was too great and I couldn’t easily get the tree straps to a higher height. The camper van had an easier time leveling here. B02 is very far from the bathrooms and potable water, so keep that in mind. We could not find a working potable water hookup with threads to fill the camper van’s water tanks and had to go to Old Station where the volunteer fire department gave us water.

The bathrooms were so stinky… especially the one by the lake. The campsites need a good cleaning. The campground is very run down.

Other than the 6 mile dirt road to the campground, it was very nice. We were there Monday-Wednesday and hardly anyone was there. It's nice being close to the lava flows and cinder cone trailhead. The lake is beautiful as well.
The 6mile dirt road into and out of the campground was a whole other story. The posted speed is 30mp (though people go much faster) the road is washboard. We were pulling a double axle 28ft trailer with my Yukon so that has a lot to do with it. So if you are planning on towing large up there, maybe rethink. We won't return just because of it, I'm pretty sure that's why we got 2 flat tires on our 6 hour ride home. It took us 45 minutes at 5mph to get in and out. If you are towing small or planning on tent camping it's great. NPS might want to include that on their description so people can avoid that.

Stayed 4 nights in July. Camp sites spacious. Flush toilets. Plenty of water pressure. Water quality excellent. Campground very quiet at night. Butte Lake delightful. Day use area there. Swimming, fishing, paddleboating and canoeing (I suppose, if you could bring one in).. Plenty of hiking trails starting from the campground/day use area. One should come provisioned. Closest significant supplies 60 minutes away in the town of Burney. Campground well maintained despite NPS staff decimations due to budget cuts. Plenty of dead and downed wood in vicinity for campfires. Access off highway is 6 miles of gravel road that is washboarded - so expect a little dust and jitters getting in, but regular sedans can do it. Well worth it.

From Redding, California drive 63 miles east on State Highway 44 to Old Station. From the intersection of 44 and State Highway 89, continue east on 44 for 11 miles. Watch for sign to Butte Lake Campground. Turn right and continue for six miles on a rough gravel road.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
