I camped at Butte Lake on a short 2 day stay at Lassen and had the best time. The campsite was in a great location close to trails and the nearby lake. The bathrooms were clean and conveniently located, and the water spigot at the bathroom and dish wash sink were nice additions. It was really nice to leave my campsite in the morning and head right to Cinder Cone Trail without worrying about finding parking (which there was plenty, really) and to then enjoy a nice relaxing evening reading by the water. Overall a great experience.

We were there the day the Park Fire reached the northern part of Lassen NP. Voluntary evacuation had been put in motion, but we opted to stay there for our single-night booking anyway. Although it smelled like campfire, ash kept falling from the sky and the campground was smoke covered, we did have a great stay there anyway.
We went up Cinder Cone with two small kiddos age 5 and 8 before leaving the next day, and we're so glad we didn't leave because of the smoke. Cinder Cone was a hassle to get up to, but it was an amazing experience. The lava beds were unreal. I've never seen anything like it before. The sudden transition between pine forest and a wall of lava is like something out of this earth.
The only down side was the gravel road leading up to Butte Lake. It was the most terrible 6 miles in an RV I have ever experienced. The rilling on the road was so severe I was really worried we would end up with at least one flat tire during the drive. Luckily we did not, but I was so relieved when we finally arrived at the main road.

The reservations website has many flaws. When I made the reservation this campground showed only 3 available sites. When we arrived at the campground, more than 50% of the sites were empty and remained that way. Also, the websote needs to do a better job of explaining where campgrounds are so that out of towners know where the campfround is in relation to the park

Wonderful campground. The spots are well spaced, the listed amenities are all present and well-maintained, and the nearby lake is wonderful for fishing, swimming, or just sitting by. If you're only coming for 1 night I would probably prefer saying near the main attractions (e.g. Manzanita Lake), but the campground itself is lovely.

From Redding, California drive 63 miles east on State Highway 44 to Old Station. From the intersection of 44 and State Highway 89, continue east on 44 for 11 miles. Watch for sign to Butte Lake Campground. Turn right and continue for six miles on a rough gravel road.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
