What Guests Are Saying
Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained environment with clean restrooms, spacious sites, and close proximity to the stunning Cinder Cone Trail and Butte Lake, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. Many campers appreciated the tranquility and wildlife, as well as the friendly park staff. However, some noted issues with steeply inclined sites, dust from fast-moving vehicles, and limited ranger presence, which could detract from the experience.

Great out-of-the-way campsite with nice amenities and great setting. The lake is beautiful and there are lots of wonderful side trips to take in the area using this campsite as a base. The cinder cone hike definitely is strenuous, but is worth the effort. Take your time and rest often. The elevation is no joke. Speaking as a geologist, the fabulous lava flow really is, especially when viewed from the top of the cinder cone. You'll never forget that view.

Serene atmosphere, scenic hikes and flushing toilets made it a worthwhile camping experience.

Would definitely reserve again. Had to travel about 6.5 mi on a gravel road and cell phone service is very spotty. The lake and hiking trails were a very short walk away from the campgrounds. Cinder cone volcano was a short hike (about 1.5 mi) away on the trail. Once at the base of cinder cone it is a good 800ish foot hike up the volcano to the top, not an extreme hike but it is a bit of a challenge and got some cell phone service as we ascended. I would recommend booking any site at this location. My travel trailer is about 29 ft long and entering/exiting the campground was manageable.

Love this campground. It is quiet and mellow. Lots of hiking trails that you can walk to. On this trip I shared a turnout parking area with the camper next to me. Next time I would try and find a site that had its own. It was fine. Just a little close.

This campsite is off the beaten path. There’s a a pretty rough gravel (washboard) road for several miles to get there. Believe it or not, going 30 mph (speed limit) makes it feel smoother than slower speeds. Once you’re there, it’s a nice spot to camp other than pesky mosquitoes at sunset and early morning while we were there. The bathrooms were some of the best we’ve experienced camping.
Cinder Cone is amazing, definitely don’t miss out on that!

Well taken care of – good amenities in the way of bathrooms, potable water, etc. Large campground but did not feel overly crowded. Would certainly recommend a visit if traveling through Lassen.
