What Guests Are Saying

Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained environment with clean restrooms, spacious sites, and close proximity to the stunning Cinder Cone Trail and Butte Lake, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. Many campers appreciated the tranquility and wildlife, as well as the friendly park staff. However, some noted issues with steeply inclined sites, dust from fast-moving vehicles, and limited ranger presence, which could detract from the experience.

Wonderful Crews keeping trash picked up from the bear bins and keeping the restrooms clean. The views from Cinder Cone and Prospect Peak are spectacular and Butte Lake is a wonderful location to cool off and take a swim in the Summer. Prospect Peak is also a volcano and cinder cone in its own right, just bigger and older. Its broad circular top provides a wandering panorama of the entire park and in its shallow center is a plethora of wildlife and flora.

Very nice out of the way campground. I understand that because of covid 19 no ranger programs were open (amphitheater or ranger station) but it appears that even normally these are not open or used.

Our site was perfect for our family of six. Very quiet, and very accessible to the lake and two different hiking spots (Bathtub lakes and Cinder Cone). It was only a 1-2 hour drive to other parts of the National Forest. The restrooms were very clean and the garbage was emptied daily. The bear lockers were generously sized. Every site was very shaded. We visited in June of 2020 right after they reopened from the Covid closure, and had no issues with the camp facilities. I would highly recommend if you want somewhere off the grid and quiet to camp. We will definitely be bringing kayaks next year to enjoy Butte Lake a bit more.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
