What Guests Are Saying

Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained environment with clean restrooms, spacious sites, and close proximity to the stunning Cinder Cone Trail and Butte Lake, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. Many campers appreciated the tranquility and wildlife, as well as the friendly park staff. However, some noted issues with steeply inclined sites, dust from fast-moving vehicles, and limited ranger presence, which could detract from the experience.

WE loved camping there. There were many songbirds. Running water and flush toilets were very helpful, when your advertising said there would be neither. What we didn't like was the high speed of people coming into the camp at night, driving upwards of 40 mph. It sent dust over our campsite.

Campground is great, bathrooms are clean, it’s super close to the cinder cone trail and obviously Butte lake… BUT…. Just know that there are quite a few sites that are on a relatively steep incline. We were at B26 and this one and some of the surrounding ones are on an incline so good luck if you’re sleeping in a tent. There is little flat ground in that specific site and some of the ones in that area so careful when you choose.

Campground was nice, sites were nicely spaced out, and the lake was beautiful. Restrooms were well maintained and clean/stocked. Definitely not enough ranger presence and there were tons of folks having campfires despite the fire ban…and lots of trash in the fire pits and bear boxes. Be better, people.

Overall a great camp site for all. The sites were large and spaced apart which was nice. The area was well kept and maintained. A huge shoutout to the rangers / staff for keeping the bathrooms and community sink areas so clean. This was a huge plus.

Plenty of Lake access for swimming and a small area for launching canoes / kayaks.

Water/restrooms were fully functional and clean. Roads and trails were well maintained. Park staff was friendly and knowledgeable. This was my girlfriend’s first time camping and we had a blast.

Non-paved/forest road to get there. Campground is butte-ful. Spacious sites, always clean restrooms, very quiet. Bit of dust due to careless drivers. Lake is wonderful to paddle and swim in.
Cinder Cone is awesome, and the Butte Lake - Snag Lake loop is a nice hike that can get a little hot, make sure to take enough water (or a filter).

Attractive campground in a secluded corner of Lassen Volcanic NP, campsites well spaced, adequate shade, clean bathrooms with plumbing, easy access to Butte Lake and trails.

Verdict: North and South summit lake campgrounds: didn’t like them. On top of each other, lake was not impressive at all/dinky.
Manazanita Lake: a great place if you have very social kids around 5-12 years old. Bring a razr scooter.
Butte Lake: the best of them all. Out in the middle of nowhere on a dirt road. A mile from cinder cone- the coolest hike in the park. Beautiful lake.

One of my favorite spots. Very sad not to have a campfire though. I appreciate that you’ve banned drones, and I’d love to see a ban on music played loud enough for other camps to heard and on generators.
