About Forest Glen Guard Station

This historic guard station offers a unique stay in the oldest Forest Service building on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. This charming two-story structure was built in 1916 under the direction of John T. Grey, District Ranger of the Mad River Ranger District on the old Trinity National Forest. Visitors can relax on the front porch and enjoy the tranquil surroundings from mid-April to the beginning of December.

Recent changes to the cabin are nice. New mattresses big enough for adults and new flooring in the kitchen.

First thing is the new keypad entry instead of the combo lock that has been on the door for 20 years. It was a surprise to me. It is a good thing my friend is familiar with keypads on other facilities. Also, the keypad is rather high to the right of the back door.
Once we got in, the cabin is great and has had a recent upgrade. New floors, nice beds upstairs. John, who did the work is a friend and he did a great job. We do love this cabin even though fire has burned all around.

I live near by and I love renting this cabin every few years. It's always a great experience and I could tell that some awesome improvements had been made since my last visit. However the upstairs smelled so badly from the floors being varnished, we got headaches from being upstairs after only a few minutes. The windows upstairs are small and even though some appliances had been installed to help with air circulation, there isn't enough air circulation to ventilate the rooms and reduce the fumes. It is honestly unsafe for anyone to sleep upstairs at this time. To not be able to use the bedrooms was very disappointing, otherwise I'd give the cabin five stars!
Our only other issue was trying to find the lock box with the key for the back door, it took 5 of us to figure that one out.. and the front door locks automatically unless you turn the deadbolt to the unlock position.
The cabin was fully stocked with every dish you could need, even a French press and lots of other coffee making accessories. We slept on the futon couch in the living room which was great, and it seemed that the other two beds were very comfy also.
Even with the issues, I very much appreciate being able to rent this cabin, and I look forward to my next visit.
