Loved the experience. Nice mattresses, supplies, games, gas stove, running water (not potable), rope swings with the view, milky way at night, and nobody for dozens of miles around. Most comfortable place compared to all other state yurts and cabins we've been to. The fosert still has definitely wounds after the fire. It was 'cozy' for our family of 6, and got surprisingly chilly at night in September, but worth it. The road might be scary if you are not used to gravel, be sure to get the directions and not just follow GPS - it will be wrong. Don't attempt to do Yolla Bolly Lake trail - it was painful: 5+ hours one way, thorns, middle section trail is impossible to follow after the fire.

There is a risk of contracting Hantavirus at this location, a disease for which there is no cure and which kills about 40% of those infected. It is very rare, but when people get it the source is normally from deer mice in mountainous areas and this cabin is in a mountainous area and is OVERRUN BY POTENTIALLY INFECTED DEER MICE. I know they are deer mice because I saw three of them very close up. There's a real chance that I was exposed while I was there. I'm not a hypochondriac, but the best case scenario is that I have to spend the next eight weeks with the worst case scenario in the back of my mind. There is a flyer about Hantavirus buried in a binder that is left on a side table, which I discovered by chance while looking for maps of the surrounding area. I later noticed a one-line reference on the booking page, but there is no explanation of how dangerous the virus is or how it is contracted. Detailed information should be included online and prominently displayed at the site, and there should be permanent solutions offered for protecting food, utensils, and other items from contact with rodents, for example, bear cannisters or other animal-proof storage being left at the site for guests to use.

Not making the risks clear and offering a solution is negligent.

Great place. No AT&T service. No fire tower. Limb down past post creek station. Mice in the building. One touched my foot as I slept

So glad to come back to this jem of a spot for a second time to see it's still the same. And to see the surrounding burn scars from the McFarland fire are starting to show signs of repair. A lot more varieties of wildflowers have volunteered themselves. The silence, working inside toilet and uninterrupted nighttime sky is hard to beat. The watering hole was also a sublime retreat from the heat! I'd recommend visitors washing any kitchen utensils thoroughly before using and securing food. As there were definitely signs of mouse activity in the cabin throughout my stay. Also be prepared for some rougher road the last few miles in. Would not recommend driving there in the dark if you have a smaller vehicle with limited height clearance. If you have an suv or truck no problem.

Cabin was amazing. So quiet and remote. No propane stove as some reviews mentioned so plan on bringing your own. Beds were very comfortable too. Highly recommend!

The good: Views and seclusion were stunning. Only saw 1 other person the entire 3 nights we stayed. When you wake up and look at the view you are left in awe overlooking the valley.

For accommodations, the beds were really nice and comfortable. The kitchen had a working sink, but the water did not run. The toilet was nice, but it did not flush 100% of the time. The BBQ worked well and you cannot beat the view for dinner.

Cons: The drive!!! The dirt road is rougher than described. Our group could not get through the Stuart Gap route and the 12 mi dirt road named Tedoc took 2.5 hours. We came in late on the first night and it felt like an adventure.

Water: Typically we use non potable water for dishes but the water didn’t work. Needed to pull some water from the swimming hole.

Final thoughts: Make sure you book this for at least 3 nights. The drive out is a battle but can be made with an SUV. Don’t let the photo of the Porsche fool you. The family really enjoyed it. It’s worth exploring once.

Incredible spot! We took Tedoc Road (option 2) up and it was one of the best maintained forest service roads I have ever driven on. The cabin was very clean and we saw/heard no signs of mice although we did not open the silverware drawers (ignorance is bliss). The views and stars from the cabin were amazing! There are a few wasp nests in the entrance to the cabin and a couple were hanging around the gate, so be mindful when you pull the pin to open the gate. Will definitely be planning to return for a longer stay to check out more of the hiking in the area. Thank you USFS!!!!

Well equipped guard station with beautiful views of the surrounding forests and mountains. Quiet and secluded area that takes you up winding gravel roads for a couple hours. Guests afraid of heights and those with low clearance vehicles might steer clear of the challenging drive. It’s really worth the extra effort as long as you’re patient and have all your food and drinking water.
