About Purgatoire Campground

Purgatoire Campground is nestled near the headwaters of the Purgatoire River in the beautiful Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The primitive campground is laid out on two loops. One is a large grassy meadow with sites that accommodate equestrian campers and one that is wooded with aspen and spruce. Constructed by the Youth Conservation Corp in 1976, Purgatoire was originally named Potato Patch Campground. The river provides nice fishing and a trailhead attracts hikers and horseback riders.

This year I went online to renew the license for my boat, somehow I had missed an email asking us to review and confirm details on the vessel. So when I tried to renew I got a messgae saying missing information please call the Denver office to confirm the details.

I spent well over 12 hours on hold over 5 days trying to reach anyone! Not just in Denver but many other offices around the state. I was convinced there were no people at all anywhere manning telephones. As a last ditch effort I contacted the San Carlos Ranger office before heading out traveling to wherever I could find a Human.

My call was answered within minutes, a DOW officer informed me of the new regulation, verified my information and within 2 minutes my dilemma was solved!! Thank you!!!

It was a beautiful area. The host, Mark, was so helpful and just a pleasure to talk to. It took a day to adjust to the altitude (9800 ft) but after that it was just wonderful.

No phone, no lights, no internet, no kids acting like fools (at least on this past trip) just nature and quiet, plus the camp host was nice too. Thank you
