About Purgatoire Campground

Purgatoire Campground is nestled near the headwaters of the Purgatoire River in the beautiful Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The primitive campground is laid out on two loops. One is a large grassy meadow with sites that accommodate equestrian campers and one that is wooded with aspen and spruce. Constructed by the Youth Conservation Corp in 1976, Purgatoire was originally named Potato Patch Campground. The river provides nice fishing and a trailhead attracts hikers and horseback riders.

Great campsite. Remote enough to be away from it all, but not too far from civilization. Site #02 couldn't have been more perfect, with steady sounds of the river, great relative privacy, and nice views. We had our 19ft travel trailer and it fit with aplomb. I will hit this campsite again, you can be sure.

Great tent camping, listened to the creek at night and enjoyed all the trees and shade around us. There is hiking right from the grounds and most sites are well spaced apart from each other.

Beautiful for those of us that like rustic/natural campsites. Unfortunately I picked the monsoon season to be there, although very green also very muddy.

This is a pretty remote and very quiet campground. Had a spot right on the river side. The valley trail is a beautiful hike through woods along the river and up to the headwaters. Even the blowdown areas from the recent storm are extremely interesting and the regrowth is something you don’t usually get to experience up close. (Handy to pick up a perfect walking stick everywhere as well). Clean toilets.
