After 40 years of anticipation, I finally got to camp at Sea Camp, and as high as my expectations were, Cumberland exceeded every one! The weather was immaculate. The island, wild and beautiful. Everyone was friendly and relaxed, and the campsites are mostly shaded under the oak canopy and felt well spaced and very private.
We reserved #4, which is small. The “need to know” on the reservation site is absolutely correct - no more than two small tents. I slept in my hammock on a 13 foot stand under a tarp. (No hanging from trees.) The stand fit perfectly in a little niche in the palmetto, but staking a big tent would mean getting into the brush, a sure way to get ticks. Except for some huge cockroaches in the bear box, insects didn’t bother us much, not even the gnats.
Being my first visit to Cumberland, I didn’t stray far from well traveled paths between the dock, camp, and Dungeness. Still, I saw all kinds of wildlife - armadillos and deer unperturbed by humans, of course horses by Dungeness and in the dunes by Sea Camp, and then there were the raccoons. I am experienced camping with those little bandits, but the ones around Sea Camp are brazen. We had to shoo away so many on the first night that we made sure to finish eating before dusk. They are really grabby, even jumped on the table!
I wish I had brought sand stakes for the tarp poles. Tension on the lines was too much for regular stakes, and had to anchor lines on the food cage and picnic table.
The new bathhouse was not yet complete as of late March 2023, but the temporary toilets flushed just fine. The new ones look nice.
Mobile phone service is practically nil. I got a bar or two out on the beach and over near the docks. Still, it was good to shut off the devices and just be.
I can’t wait to return. Camping on Cumberland was an amazing experience, absolutely beautiful! Can’t recommend enough!

Absolutely beautiful scenery and rich history! My third trip. Be careful, the raccoons are relentless at Sea Camp and take the rangers seriously when they say all food in the provided metal boxes!

Cumberland Island is so beautiful and so much fun. My 10 year old granddaughter rated the trip A+++. We camped 4 nights, initially planned split time between Sea Camp and Stafford Beach but no-shows at Sea Camp resulted in us staying all 4 nights there, albeit in 4 different sites because there is unfortunately no way to know until after the last boat if campers who booked but didn’t cancel are coming or not. 3 sites booked all week ended up empty all week. Both campgrounds are beautiful and close to the beach, we just had a lot of gear so this time staying at Sea Camp was easier.
