Waiʻānapanapa State Park Cabins offer a beautiful and well-equipped yet rustic stay, with amenities like a hot plate, fridge, and microwave. Guests should be prepared for bugs and geckos, as well as the need to bring their own towels and utensils. Beautiful 2 night stay here. The cabins are well equipped but rustic. Our cabin had bugs and geckos in it. Caught two geckos and released them outside. Then I noticed more were coming in through cracks in the walls 😳 bring towels, sheets, utensils, pillows, pots and pans because there are none. Hot plate, fridge, microwave and hot water. No reservations needed for black sand beach you can come and go as you please. If you don’t mind tiny critters and bugs it’s a great place to stay, not having to do The Road to Hana all in one day is a huge plus. Lots of mosquitoes. Clean the cabin before you leave!

I planned a March trip to Maui based upon my reservation to these cabins with the intent to save money and spend more time near Hana. I booked the max 3 nights for non-residents or we would have stayed a little longer. Getting the reservation took much planning. It felt as though almost all the other cabins were occupied by locals.
Note that we stayed 3 nights in an overpriced condo in Kihei before our cabin stay, and 2 nights in a tentalow at Camp Oluwalu after. We planned ahead and purchased needed supplies from Walmart for the cabin and tentalow stays, as well as for cooking in the condo. Of the three stays on the island, we enjoyed the condo the least. We ended up donating most of the supplies before our trip back to the mainland and still saved money.
The other reviews are accurate. The mattresses are full size and adequately comfortable. We were diligent in keeping doors closed and bugs out. When we arrived, our cabin was cleaner than the condo we stayed at. We cleaned the cabin to leave it just as clean or better for the next guests. We were worried about no AC, and it did get a little warm inside without a breeze coming through the screened windows, but it always cooled down at night.
Pros:
The location and the views were amazing. The price is right. Electricity and a kitchen is a huge bonus for quasi camping. Proximity to Hana and some great beaches.
Cons:
In and out privileges are a hassle. They encouraged us to stay at the cabin from 5.30pm on when they close the gate, but leave it unlocked. Then everytime we tried to go in the gate, the guards never remembered who we were and were not super friendly.
I wish I would have known that when the black sand beach and hiking trails close at 5.30pm, the cabin dwellers also cannot access the beach as I was trying to avoid the crowds.
Overall we enjoyed our cabin stay and I would recommend to anyone willing to plan ahead.

Great cabins, beautiful location! The cabins were clean and looked like they’ve been recently updated. They have electricity, nice bathrooms with hot water for showers, and microwave in the kitchen. Beds were comfortable! The view from our balcony was amazing, you can see the ocean from most of the cabins, we stayed in Cabin 1. The black sand beach is a 5 min walk away. The area is nice and quiet. You can’t beat it!

We had a great stay at the cabin. We only stayed one night, but the views were amazing, and the stay was quiet and relaxing.
Some things to note before you book:
- the cabin did have an equipped kitchen, however, you would need to bring in your own utensils.
- the cabin provides bunk beds which are not super comfortable. For those with back problems this might be an issue
- the cabin does not provide bed sheets, blankets, or pillows. We visited in December and it got chilly at night.
- there were insects outside (it is a tropical wild area), keep the doors to cabin closed as much as possible and it shouldn't be a problem
- you do need to clean the cabin fully before leaving. You will also only find it as clean as the last guest left it.
Overall, consider the cabins as more comfortable and equipped camping. It's not a hotel.

This was an amazing state park, black sand beaches. We stayed in the cabins for 2 nights and what a treat it was. The cabin is a àgreat size. And sleeps many. Super close to downtown Hana. You can make dinner with your kitchen or bbq outside. There are trails along the private beach for the cabins. It's a must if you want quiet, beauty and relaxation.
