About Bishop Mountain Cabin

Bishop Mountain Cabin was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. The one-room cabin formerly housed Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management employees who stayed there to watch for forest fires. A historic fire lookout tower is nearby. The cabin was used for lookout workers until the early 1980s. Guests can drive to the cabin from early June through mid-November, weather permitting, although about 16 miles of the trip are on high-clearance gravel roads. Four wheel drive pick-up trucks are required for cabin access. During winter months November through May, access to the cabin is accessible by snowmobile or other snow means, on an ungroomed portion of the road. The cabin provides several conveniences, but guests should be prepared to bring most of their own supplies and gear for a comfortable stay.

What Guests Are Saying

Guests enjoyed their stay at Bishop Mountain Cabin, praising the amazing views, comfortable mattresses, and the fun environment for kids and pets. The cabin is secluded and offers a peaceful retreat, with adequate heating from the stove and plenty of firewood available. While some repairs are needed for the screen porch and the cabin was dusty, overall, guests found it to be a nice getaway and plan to return.

The information given for this cabin says that the road is "easily accessible" during the summer, leading me to believe that the road would be windy and gravel but smooth on the way up. Easily accessible for a car with little clearance, right? Wrong. We did not find the road to be easily accessible. We found it to be only passable by 4x4, a truck with high clearance and off-road tires would be preferred. If you go slow it is OK for an all-wheel drive with normal tires but our fear of blowing a tire led us to cut our visit short, especially since we would have had to drive that road 3 more times. Please edit the description of this cabin to give renters a more realistic expectation of the road conditions.
Other than the road, we thought the cabin was great. The old iron stove was fun to figure out; even though we didn't get it to stay lit through the night, the cabin was insulated enough that we were not bothered by the below 30F morning. The views and the night sky were absolutely breathtaking.

Gorgeous view. No mice or evidence of mice in the cabin. Plenty of firewood. Fire ring was huge. Plenty of room to roam. If we closed the gate, no visitors came to see the lookout.

A signage system or lock system to keep people on the other side of the gate would be helpful. Or signage at the gate saying the look out tower is inaccessible.
