Squirrel Meadows Cabin

We skied in and enjoyed the fresh snow and the quiet. Cabin was in immaculate condition. Don’t expect to sleep late—snow mobiles were buzzing up to the cabin and into the meadow by 10am. Plenty of evidence (tracks) that a fox is getting pretty accustomed to visiting the cabin—remember, please don’t feed the wildlife!

my wife and i stayed at squirrel meadows at the end of october for 4 nights, the weather was cold when we arrived (15 degrees) but we had the cabin warm and comfortable in about an hour after getting a fire started in the wood burning stove which is your main form of heat, there is also a wood fired cooking stove that if you use would provide heat also, we took along our propane stove so didn't use it, but those are your only options, there is no electricity at the cabin, there was plenty of wood in the room off the back of the cabin along with an ax and splitting maul, there was plenty of wood split for our visit and we made sure we split at least as much as we used for the next occupants

your source of water is a hand pump out back i though it might be frozen but worked fine and from reading in log book from past visitors it works all year round for your water source

the cabin itself is a simple 2 room cabin with the front room containing the wood cooking stove, 2 tables one with 4 chairs and a cabinet with some plates, pots, pans and utensils for use, the 2nd room contains the wood heating stove and 3 sets of bunk beds, one note on those, if you double up the sleeping pads they are much more comfortable, there is a 3rd screened in porch are on back that holds the firewood

the cabin is about 24 miles from the closest town (ashton idaho) the road to the cabin is paved about half way and gravel the rest, the gravel was in pretty good shape when we visited and we had no problems finding the cabin

as far as things to do, there are some hiking trails right at the cabin, you are relatively close to yellowstone national park and grand teton national park, we did drive the flagg ranch road from the cabin to flagg ranch which is at the northern end of grand teton national park it was only 25 miles but took us an hour and 40 minutes to travel due to snow and the narrowness of the road

if you are looking for someplace to get away and unplug this is a great choice

This is a wonderful cabin that is well maintained and I had a lovely stay here. The only thing that put a small damper on my experience was that I was doing this trip as a loop from my home in Wilson, WY on my motorcycle and I had to pick up the key for the cabin at the Ashton ranger station and return it back at that station, which added about 50 miles onto my trip. I knew this in advance and made the decision to keep the reservation anyway, but it would be nice if the cabin could be accessed with a combination lock or the key could be dropped at a different location. This is always helpful when there are multiple ways to access the rental. With that said, it's still totally worth staying here if you have the opportunity. It's beautiful country back there and fun to explore.

We snowmobiled in and stayed overnight. The cabin was warm and cozy. There was plenty of firewood in an inclosed room attached to the back of the cabin.
The bunk beds had decent pads on them, the cabin is well maintained, and the road was groomed.

We have been visiting this cabin for almost 20 years, we returned this year after a 10 year break and still love to stay at this cabin and really enjoy the great scenery the area has to offer. We used to see moose, elk, deer, bears and coyotes but things have changed and we didn't see any animals at all this last trip. We look forward to staying again next year.
