About Redfish Cabin

A stay at the historic Redfish Cabin is like having your own private Idaho! Nestled in the trees above the northern shore of Redfish Lake at an elevation of 6,570 feet, the historic (Civilian Conservation Corps 1930's era) cabin offers a perfect getaway for a small family or group of friends. The cabin is warm and cozy, the views are breathtaking, recreation opportunities abound and starry nights provide a gateway to heaven. And you can share it all with your canine family member. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area was established in 1972 for its natural, scenic, historic, pastoral, and fish and wildlife values. Redfish Lake is by far the most popular location in the area; however, a fall or winter visit provides a totally different experience than the "Coney Island" atmosphere of summer. Available only in the fall and winter, this is a special time of year where few visitors come to enjoy the beauty and solitude of the lake and surrounding mountain peaks.

The timing was perfect. Brisk Fall, no crowds, the lake to ourselves. Warm and toasty in cabin. Vault toilet was spotless. Top bunk is a challenge to get into for us old folks, but it was fun!
We will be back!

We try to use the cabin at least one time during the off season (not available for rent during peak season). There is something magical about having Redfish almost completely to yourself. This is particularly true if you visit in the summer. Sure, the water is not as inviting but the mountains are still majestic.

Everything at the cabin was great. We really appreciated having the door to the bathroom open; we set up a small portable toilet with a bag to use at night, which we could empty into the vault toilet during the day. It was nice having the propane fireplace working!

The Redfish Cabin is a wonderful winter overnight stay. It was clean, warm and ready for my visit. I met the guests who stayed before me and they are regulars to the Cabin as well. They left a gallon of bottled water in the refrigerator so the need to melt snow was much less. Another 6 inches of snow fell over night. Beautiful.
