South Marcum Campground

Nice shady spot, good access to the bathrooms and potable water.

The campsites are beautiful, very spacious, and private. Of course, the lakeside sites are very special, but I stayed at 120 and enjoyed gazing out into the deep woods. Paddling the lake was great. I enjoyed paddling kayak to the beach at North Marcum Rec. Area and swimming there. The Rend Lake Bike Trail is very nice. I explored the routes several times, then set out from South Marcum to the very end at North Sandusky Campground. Twenty miles that day. The grade of the trail is good. Really can't say enough about the bike trail. I will certainly camp at South Marcum again.

Huge, well spaced sites. Level, paved and utilities located very well. Sites in "BRID" (Buck Ridge) loop aver very close to the highway (I-57) and the highway noise was very distracting (could hardly have a conversation around the fire pit....) and constant "droning" of transport truck tires would keep you awake if you slept with the windows open/in a tent. Very close (short drive) to Rend Lake and all of the amenities there. Bathhouses were decent and flush toilets in each loop were clean and close by. Small walking trail around a small lake, but would have to drive to other facilities at Rend lake. Other loops further west were a bit quieter. Good for an overnight stop on our way north to Chicago. No grocery nearby (8-10 miles) but some gas stations/fast food at I-57 exit. Park staff very friendly and helpful. Would stay again, but definitely in one of the other loops further from the highway.

We love Rend Lake and going camping there. This spot #38 was not so good. It was hard to back into and it was on a slant and the picnic table area was across a little ditch.

I have a frequent visitor to this campground. Road noise is a factor in the loops farther east but not so that I skip booking preferred sites. I enjoy the bike trail that comes there here as well as the other campgrounds on the banks of the lake. I usually try to get frozen custard in Sesser and white pie from Burtons in Whittington.
