We come to Thompson Causeway several times a year. Never stayed in the River Loop. We got a good site looking out at the Mississippi River. Liked the spot.

Everything about Thomson Causeway is great. The marshes and shoreline are fantastic and sunsets across the river are always spectacular. You can find everything from sand prairie to riparian forest within a few miles of the campground on the Great River Trail which is the main reason I camp there. The campsites are flat, level and well maintained and the restroom-shower buildings are clean and have plenty of hot water. I'm just happy we are back to being able to do same-day arrivals without reservations so I can again enjoy one-night stays at Thomson Causeway when riding the trail.

This campground is laid out nicely and very well maintained. Even the pit toilets were kept very clean. The camp sites are consistently well designed with neat driveways, good tables, and the fire pit rightly positioned in the far corner of the pad area. The majority of sites have concrete driveways. My only complaint on the layout is that many sites are just too close together. Most all sites have excellent shade. The natural scenery at this park is nice, with lots of wildflowers and birds, and a great view of the Mississippi River.
The campground was quiet during the summer weekdays but it got busy and rowdy on the weekend with barking dogs and the like.

Well-maintained, clean, spacious (level!) sites in a wondrous setting, surrounded by birds and animals (and turtles!)
Friendly, courteous Rangers and volunteers are welcoming, helpful and informative.
Bring your bicycles to ride through the savanna prairie and enjoy the wildflowers. Hike through the woods and watch for fox.
Or sit in a comfortable chair and watch the Mississippi River roll by.

Unfortunately, we were there on the hottest, most humid weekend all summer so the weather didn't really cooperate. We left early due to an incoming storm. But, the campground itself was good. Sites were a little close together. The pit toilets could use some attention but the staff at the gate were friendly and the shower house up the road was clean.
