I've been camping at Hardin Ridge Campground on and off for over 50 years, and it is still my favorite place to camp. The campsites are huge, private, and nestled in a beautiful forest on the southeast side of Bloomington, along Lake Monroe.
Because it's a U.S. Forest Service campground rather than a state park, it has a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. The campground is exceptionally well maintained, the restrooms and shower facilities are always very clean, and the camp hosts are some of the friendliest and most helpful people you'll meet.
If you enjoy nature, Hardin Ridge is hard to beat. Wildlife is everywhere, and one of our favorite traditions is hunting for geodes—we've found dozens right within the campground over the years. There are plenty of hiking trails, including a scenic trail that leads to the amphitheater and all the way to the lake and beach. The amphitheater is a great feature, especially for families and evening programs.
For a day on the water, we rented a pontoon boat from Two Herons Marina at the nearby Cutright Boat Ramp, just across the causeway on State Road 446. It was a fantastic addition to our camping trip.
After five decades of camping here, I can honestly say Hardin Ridge has never lost its charm. If you're looking for spacious wooded campsites, beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and a peaceful, well-kept campground, this is the place. We look forward to coming back every year.

The camp site large and verry nice, right beside a pond. The grandkids enjoyed fishing in the pond. It was verry quiet especially since we were there over the 4th of July holiday.

They need to describe the camping lots better on the site. Our lot was next to impossible to get settled into with a tree smack in the middle of the lot. When we out maneuvered the tree, we couldn’t reach the electrical pole. Many lots are similar. I did like the space between the lots, and the scenery was great. Be aware many of the lots are on a fairly severe grade.

I was in the hospital and needed to cancel my reservation. I was going to be camping with a friend. They canceled as well. They got a partial refund.I was told they couldn't cancel for me.I had to appeal it to reservation.Dot gov who denied it

We always enjoy our stays at Hardin ridge. It was a very hot couple days, but because of all the big beautiful trees and the canopy from them we stayed very comfortable. It felt 20 degrees cooler.

From Bedford, go 7 miles east on US 50. Go north on SR 446 for 12 miles and turn west on Chapel Hill Road and travel 2 miles to the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area.
From Bloomington, 46 and 446 intersection, go 14 miles south on SR 446. Turn west on Chapel Hill Road and travel 2 miles to the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area.
Hardin Ridge is accessible via US 50, which is approximately 7 miles to the south, and SR 446, which runs north-south nearby. These roads provide the primary routes to the campground from surrounding areas.
