Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument Camping

Nice quiet spot along the Penobscot River. Clean campground….well maintained.

Lunksoos campground was beautiful and well maintained. On the reservation page, it should be made more clear that the Lunksoos lean-to is not actually at the campground, but is a hike of more than 4 miles away from it.

Had a great visit. Lunksoos sites are very convenient and nicely kept.

This campsite was clean and in excellent location. Just feet away from the water that is easy to access. Each of the three campsites comes with a fire pit with a removable grill and a picnic table. Sites are divided only with rocks and so are not fully private, but there is space to park your vehicle between campsites to add to your privacy. The roads to get to the campsite arc gravel and littered with large rocks so I would not recommend for smaller vehicles or those low to the ground. Some of the other campers were in small RVs and had no issue getting there. You are required to cross a large bridge that looks much more unstable than it is so beware of this if that is something you are not comfortable with. The kiosk at the entry point is refilled regularly with maps, guides, and passport stamps and is within eyesight of all three camp sites. There is a vault toilet next to campsite 3 but is a very short walk from all three sites. It is open both at the bottom and top and has a lock on the inside. It was surprisingly clean and stocked with plenty of toilet paper. Overall I would highly recommend this campsite provided you don't require electricity or water hookups. It is not so far from civilization that you can't easily pop into town for firewood or food, but secluded enough to see the stars and plenty of nature. If you're looking for a peaceful place to set up a tent and get some rest after a long day of exploring, this is a great choice!

My first time using the group sites - they worked wonderfully and though on the Seboeis Road, they were very quiet.

Thoroughly enjoyed our 4 days in the Monument. The Wassataquoik lean-to, campsite and privy were all in excellent shape; Foliage was spectacular and the star-gazing was phenomenal.

Very quiet piece of wilderness, and the river was paddle-able even at the low water levels now. We went 3 miles upstream and back, and a mile downstream and back. Beware of the many potholes and protruding rocks in the dirt roads; I destroyed my muffler on the end of a wooden bridge where it meets the dirt road, which was deeply eroded. We saw wildlife every day and heard owls at night. The stars are spectacular. The visitor center was closed because of the federal budget, but reopened the day we left through the generosity of the non-profit "Friends" group. The ponds off the Loop Road are very nice. It got cold at night (October) but there's plenty of dry firewood lying on the ground everywhere. We filtered river water, which was already very clean looking. Outhouse could use a better ventilation method... No cell service but if you drive to the nearby hill top visitor center there is some reception.

We stayed at Group Site 7 at Lunksoos, which had 3 tent pads, 2 picnic tables, and a spacious bear box. The group sites are a little ways past the rest of the sites. Beautiful stargazing from the boat launch! The contact station was a highlight.

Quiet, clean, with great views of Katahdin. Will be back.

Quiet, peaceful. Lots of room for the group. Bathroom facilities were top notch.
