My fault that I was not prepared to carry my gear so far to my campsite, but other than that, it was amazing. Much of the time I was the only person in the campground. No cell phone, no electricity, just the way I like it.

We booked a campsite at the halfway point of our 10 hour drive back to Canada. We drove 5 hours to Katahdin, calling the listed contact number multiple times on the way there to let them know we would be arriving late and to make sure we would be able to find our campsite. No one answered. By the time we arrived it was dark. I am familiar with back country roads but this took it to another level. There were about a million signs about yielding to logging trucks, and 2-3 signs from the actual park directing us extremely vaguely where to go. By the time we were an hour and a half into delicately making our way down the logging roads , not knowing if we were going the right way we were so stressed out and frustrated with the poor signage that we couldn’t imagine the park had anything good to offer so we ended our trip early and just decided to drive straight through the night back to Canada. This was the most poorly run campground I’ve ever been to and I’ve stayed at many. Do not visit.

The contact station is amazing, really the highlight! And the night sky- so many stars!
The roads are in such bad shape that driving anywhere was stressful, especially as one occasionally meets a truck and there are spots 2 vehicles cannot pass. A deterrent for us to return.
Loved the views of Katahdin from the lookout and from Barnard Mtn. Like the trail to Deasey Pond.
Our Lunksoos campsite was well cared-for and easy to walk in to.

Wonderful camp spot. Sunny but that was fine with me. Peaceful and beautiful. Some of the time there was no one else there.

Nice spot for the bigger tent sites. Extremely buggy location and the drive into the site is difficult road wise but overall good site for a large group.

Great small spread out campground with easy access to the river. My second day I spotted a black bear crossing the river. Visitor center is about a 10 minute drive. All roads in the park are gravel. Pretty remote area. There’s a gas station, diner and motel about a half hour away. Buy firewood before going to this area. Very quiet and peaceful.

We rode fat bikes from the North Entrance to the Lunksus lean-too and we had a great time though the IAT was so overgrown that we honestly were afraid at times that we were not on a trail anymore. I wish some resources were used to maintain the trails that exist in the back country instead of building multi million dollar welcome stations. We had an amazing time though I fear these trails will be lost soon and you will have wasted miles of an amazing trail system.

Policies & Rules
General
- Campsites at Upper East Branch, Lunksoos and Sandbank Stream can be accessed by road during the summer. Upper East Branch and Lunksoos campsites require a short walk from the parking area to the campsites. Sandbank Stream is the only location that will accommodate small RVs and campers. All other sites and lean-tos require hiking, biking or paddling for access.
- Roads with in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument are typically open to motorized vehicles from late May to mid-November. Exact dates vary depending on road conditions. At other times of year, access is by foot or bicycle only. Check current conditions. All vehicles (including bicycles, e-bikes, and other motorized vehicles) must follow established speed limits when traveling within Katahdin Woods and Waters NM. The Katahdin Loop Road and Seboeis River Road speed limit is 15mph. All other roads within Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument have a 25mph speed limit. Sometimes, vehicles may need to travel at slower speeds depending on current road conditions.
- It is not possible to drive from the north entrance to the south entrance through the monument. Some sites may be accessed only from the north and others only from the south, unless you are paddling or hiking long distances.
- Do not bring firewood from more than 50 miles away. Help protect forests from the spread of hidden, tree-killing insects by obtaining firewood from local vendors near the monument. Please visit Don't Move Firewood for more information.
- Pets are permitted at campsites and must be leashed at all times. Leashes must be six feet or less in length. Pets are not permitted in lean-tos or huts.
- All scented items (food, trash, coolers, toiletries, cooking materials, and cleaning supplies) must be stored inside your sealed vehicle or in an NPS wildlife-proof locker at your campsite or picnic site. Help us keep the wildlife wild.
