We have stopped at persimmon hill campgrounds for a few years now. It is a convenient and beautiful place to break up our trip to the Gulf of Mexico in mid winter. While the park is not busy at that time of year it has many off season charms. I like to rock hunt and walking around the pond at low water levels can be productive. This year’s find was a nice sized coral agate. The park is also close to Clarksdale and many other “Blues” destinations, if you’re a fan. The Catfish Hut is just down the road and is an old school restaurant with good food and charm.

Do not expect power 24/7. Lost power in middle of the night while below freezing. Surge protector did not work right and i lost heater and microwave with power fluctuations. Also random people not camping show up in the night to use bathhouse. Virtually zero security here. I wont be back anytime soon unless i want to die of exposure.

This is the swamp! The trails are very nice! The local food is great! Its the best way to get to know the people and the country we live in! Make sure you check out the McIlhenny co. Tabasco plant! Take a air boat ride in the swamp! Take in the culture! Talk to the locals!!! You can rent a canoe at the office!
